The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a college financial aid application form used to apply for U.S. federal grants, such as Pell Grants and Stafford Loans. This application is used by most state colleges for financial aid and many scholarships.

CSS Profile is a supplemental college financial aid program used by many private colleges and universities to award scholarships and grants. If your school requires a CSS Profile, you must complete both the CSS Profile and the FAFSA.

Families with an annual income of $40,000 or less and an EFC of 5,500 or less qualify for a Pell Grant, but this depends on many factors. Your Pell Grant eligibility is determined based on your answers to questions on the FAFSA.
If you are a dependent student (most are unmarried students under the age of 24), you will need your parents' financial information to file the FAFSA. If they refuse, your federal financial aid may be limited to federal student loans. For a complete list of requirements for dependent and independent students, see Federal Student Financial Aid.
If your parents are divorced and you are a student's dependent, you will need financial information from the parents you lived with for the last 12 months, or from their new spouse/stepparents if you remarried. If you don't currently live with one of your parents, this is the parent you lived with in the last 12 months before you became single. If you both lived the same, live with the person who contributed more financially to you during that 12-month period. It may not be the parent you claim as a dependent on your tax return. The rules for the CSS profile are different, and unlike the FAFSA, financial information may be required if the parents are divorced.
If you need to send both, it's more efficient to send the CSS profile first. All of the FAFSA information is a subset of the CSS profile, and the CSS profile allows you to enter information on the FAFSA.

It's best to evaluate your tax information and submit your FAFSA as early as possible, before the college or state FAFSA deadline. The best way is to fill out your FAFSA online and use the IRS information search tool. This automatically transfers your information from the IRS, reducing the amount of paperwork required by financial aid agencies.
You will use your previous year's application. For example, the 2023-2024 FAFSA due in the fall. In the spring of 2022 or 2023, you will use your application from the previous year (2021). If you made a mistake, you can file a FAFSA correction. For more information, see How to Make Changes to Your FAFSA.
You will receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) 1-4 weeks after you submit your FAFSA. SAR has compiled the data you provided on the FAFSA and will notify you if any data is missing. Please send corrections or required information as soon as possible to avoid delays.
An asterisk next to Expected Family Contribution or EFC means your application has been selected for review. You will need to provide additional documentation to support the information on the FAFSA. These inspections were previously random, but now they are more focused on areas where errors and fraud are more likely to be found.

I believe the best way to start your FAFSA federal student aid application is to print the FAFSA form. Most people file their FAFSA online, but it's important not to make mistakes. Most people make fewer mistakes when checking hard copies rather than browsing web pages. The form can be confusing, especially since the student has to fill out the form, and in most cases it has to be the parent.
A nice feature of the printable FAFSA form is that you can fill out the form online before printing it out. This makes it easy to check after printing. I like to use a colored marker pen to highlight things that need more clarification, such as the net worth of an investment.
After completing the paper copy of the FAFSA, I recommend submitting the information online to the free online FAFSA program.
