In the months leading up to World War II, the U.S. Army entered into the first of several leases (August 15, 1940) with the City of Stockton to build and operate the Stockton Municipal Airfield Army Training Facility.
Stockton Army Field was originally staffed by the 68th Air Base Group (Special) as part of the Air Force Advanced Flight School. From 1940 to 1945, Stockton Field was used as the training base of the West Coast Training Center (later Western Flight Training Command), based at Santa Ana Army Air Force Base. In May 1944, all facilities were incorporated into the 3033rd Army Air Base. Due to the airport's proximity to Army Air Corps and Army Service Corps logistics facilities, the location quickly became a logistics hub for the U.S. Army, and the Army Air Corps in particular. This resulted in an increase in the number of cargo planes passing through Stockton Airport. The military depot facility includes 46 miles (74 kilometers) of track that connects to the adjacent South Pacific and Western Pacific railroads and is used to move and distribute an average of 200 military equipment wagons per day.
On 2 March 1945, the last flight completed training and Stockton AAF handed over control from Western Flight Training Command to Air Transport Command. With this transfer, the 3033rd AAFBU was renamed the 591st AAFBU.

In October 1946 Stockton AAF declared surplus. 1,044.18 acres are in the process of being transferred to the War Resources Administration, with 71.36 acres, including much of the former camp including homes, storage and sewage treatment plant, leased to the U.S. Army's Stockton Geral Depot in nearby Lathrop to the south.
The City of Stockton and San Joaquin County reopened the former Stockton Municipal Airport on December 16, 1946, under a joint (provisional) permit. There are approximately 175 buildings on 1,044.18 acres of leased land (of which 950 are currently licensed airport), including 50 airport-related buildings that are covered by the above permit. The buildings are mainly Quartermaster 700 and 800 series buildings with concrete foundations, wooden floors, composite roofs and wood siding.
On January 29, 1947, the 71.36-acre former Stockton Airfield retained by the U.S. Army was officially named Stockton Geral Depot Field Annex and in 1948 it was named Sharpe Geral Depot Field Annex and Stockton Geral Depot was renamed Sharpe Geral Depot. On January 31, 1948, the U.S. Army left Stockton Field with the exception of the Sharpe Geral Depot Field Annex; on the same day, the city of Stockton and San Joaquin County jointly took control of the field (Stockton Record 1964).
The Sharpe Geral Depot Field Annex consists of two lots adjacent to the south-west of what is now Stockton Metropolitan Airport. The Sharpe Geral Depot Field Annex is operated by the United States Army as a separate, independent military facility under the Sharpe Geral Depot. With the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950 and the rapid expansion of operations and base facilities, Sharp Gerald Base Base Base Base was renamed Sharp Gerald Base Base Base Base to reflect its support mission. During this period, the site was mainly used for family housing, leisure facilities and other ancillary facilities at the Sharp Gerald Warehouse. One such enemy was the California Army National Guard's 164th Field Artillery Battalion, which occupied a small portion of the Sharp Girard Base Force Field Annex until a new National Guard was built on state property south of that site in 1952 Army Armory.

On July 8, 1957, the City of Stockton donated half of its interest in Stockton Municipal Airport through Grant Deed, and San Joaquin County assumed management of the airport (pursuant to an agreement with the United States of America dated December 23, 1948 (Appendix A)).
The outbreak of the Korean War led to further changes to the missions at Sharp Gerald Base and the Force Field Annex at Sharp Gerald Base. Sharp was chosen as the storage site for surplus military diesel locomotives from the Cold War era. After being coated with a lubricating oil preservative, each locomotive is placed in an individual enclosure protected by an electrically controlled dehumidification system.
In 1958, Sharp Gerald received air support support for the U.S. Army's Fourth Aircraft Echelon in the U.S. Army's Sixth District. The sixth U.S. Army Aircraft Maintenance Event, operated by Detachment 3, 6932nd Service Unit, is held at this location. The unit provides rotorcraft and fixed-wing liaison maintenance support for the U.S. Army's Sixth Army District and occupies buildings 1000, 1001, and 1003. The site is also home to the 30th Engineer Group (Topography) and the 521st Company of Engineers (Topography, Aerospace). In 1959 and 1960, construction of a new runway, hangars, and shops at Sharp Army Base reduced the use of Stockton Field by the military. In June 1961, aircraft maintenance operations were moved to Fort Zumba, California. By July 1962, Army Materiel Command had been established with several subordinate commands, including Supply and Repair Command. This resulted in another name change as Sharp Geral Deport became Sharp Army Base Field Annex.
On July 11, 1964, Stockton Municipal Airport officially changed its name to Stockton Metropolitan Airport, reflecting its changing role as a civil airport. Sharpe Army Depot Field Annex also built 30 new military family housing units in 1964, which resulted in the closure of older family housing units on the site.

In the last months of 1965, support for military aviation increased again due to the role of the US military in Southeast Asia. As the Vietnam War continued, the mission of the Sharpe Army Depot Field Annex continued. Sharp became an important West Coast facility for Army Materiel Command and a major supplier of equipment to the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Take cocoons from 4 stored diesel locomotives. Twelve of these locomotives were sent to other military bases, while two remained at Sharp to receive deliveries and expedite the distribution of an average of 30 wagons a day of military supplies. Rail transport accounts for approximately 38 percent of the base's total freight traffic.
In April 1966, the first units of troops from the command of the 56th ammunition base and the command company arrived at the scene, in July, the units from the command of the 58th field base and the command company arrived at the scene.
Until 1967, the Commander of the Sharpe Army Depot Field Annex Headquarters was responsible for commanding units assigned to the Sharpe Army Depot Field Annex. This includes oversight of all affiliated and temporary units, special services, support services, learning centers, operations officers, and NCO clubs, including support for the Army Reserve, Army National Guard, and transport units.
In January 1966, the military clothing store moved from the Sacramto Army Depot to the T-88 building on the site. The AAFES San Francisco Presidio branch exchange was also established in the T-137 building. The limited number of postal flats in the Sharpe Army Depot field annex led to 44 "unsuitable quarters" on the site, with the old barracks building converted into "living quarters" with two apartments per floor. To further accommodate the growing number of troops currently stationed at Sharp's Army Base Expansion, the site now offers a range of additional services such as laundry, dry cleaning and medical facilities.

In the early 1970s, the need for troops stationed near Sharp Army Base decreased as military posts were converted to War Department civil service posts. Due to personnel changes, Sharp Army Base determined that the Field Annex was no longer needed and began to dispose of the Sharp Army Base Field Annex.
The Sharpe Army Depot Field Annex was abandoned in 1973 with the presence of the United States Army in the field, and all land and buildings returned to San Joaquin County. Some of the original World War II buildings still exist, including the American Legion Sharpe Geral Depot Post 632, a World War II mess hall now located in the Sharpe Army Depot Field Annex at 1700 Northrop Street, Building 372.
Although regulars on active duty left the airport after the closure of the Sharpe Army Depot Field Annex, the airport still retains a military presence in the form of ground operations and military aviation
