Along the Cascade Loop, you'll find a little slice of everything that makes Washington great: the many mountains, rivers, and lakes that make up the unique Pacific Northwest. The trail runs along the cliffs of North Cascades National Park, past the fertile farmland of the Skagit Valley and the apple orchards of Wenatchee, and along the shores of Lake Chelan. You'll stop in charming towns like Bavarian-style Leavenworth and Western-themed Winthrop. Yes, we're talking about it as one of the best hikes in the United States, but we're not alone in that opinion: as of January 2021, the Cascade Loop has been named one of 34 National Scenic Byways of no.

You can drive the Cascade Loop on a weekend, but give yourself four or five days to really experience it. The North Cascades Highway, or State Route 20, is closed in the winter and reopened every spring, usually in late May. Plan to come out between June and October, but check the Washington State Department of Transportation site for the latest information on opening dates. Driving an electric car? You will see many ports along the way. Although you can ride the loop in any direction, go clockwise for the best views. Start in the town of Everett, 30 minutes north of Seattle, and head east on Highway 2 along the Skykomish River and over Stevens Pass. Here are some stops worth making.
Grab a coffee and a buttermilk biscuit made from an egg sandwich from the Coffee Shop on the waterfront in downtown Everett. Then put Snohomish—the Antique Capital of the Northwest—into your navigation system. If you like to collect or just browse interesting antiques, head to an antique store or Remember When Antique Shop for items from the past. Then stretch your legs at Wallace Falls State Park, where the 5.6-mile Woody Trail hike passes nine waterfalls, including the 265-foot Middle Falls.
Stevens Pass Bike Park is set to reopen this summer after a short hiatus. It's the only elevated bike trail, with purpose built single track tracks, jumps, tables, ramps, berms and rescue tracks. If you're not a biker, there's still plenty to do in Stevens Pass in the summer, including hiking, scenic horseback riding, and 18-hole disc golf.
Spend a night or two in faux Bavarian Leavenworth. Budget hotel brand Loge opened a downtown outpost here in 2020, with gear and bike rentals, live music, free morning yoga, and an outdoor beer garden (from $109). This Alps-like town has plenty of places to drink beer, but we like Yodelin for rice dishes and wine or Bushel and Bee Taproom for cider. In the morning, grab a coffee and breakfast burrito at Argonaut before heading out on the 4.2-mile Icicle Gorge Trail, a popular hike in the Icicle Creek Valley.

Wenatchee feels a world away from the mountain trails you've just walked. This rolling, fertile garden is comfortable enough to have apple and fruit orchards in late summer and fall. Stop at the Pybus Public Market, with shops, cafes and eateries in the original mill, and Stutzman Ranch for peaches or cherries. Before you head into Lake Chelan, stop at Lone Pine Fruit and Espresso, a roadside stand along the Columbia River that sells coffee and seasonal produce.
As the largest lake in the state and the third deepest in the United States, this natural wonder is 50 miles long and approximately 1,500 feet deep. Leave your car and take the Lady of the Lake ferry to Stehekin, a roadless lakeside town accessible only by hiking or boating. Once there, you can grab a strawberry-rhubarb pie in the parking lot at Stehekin Pastry Company (from $240), or stay at the 27-room North Cascades Lodge in Stehekin (from $249) , which is located in the harbor. From there, you're in a great position for paddleboarding, kayaking, or hiking.
In the winter, the 60-mile Methow Valley is known for its 200 miles of ski trails. But in the summer, they're great for hiking, biking, and trail running. The town of Twisp is known for its arts and culture, thanks to its festivals, downtown art gallery, and flea markets. The Methow Valley Farmers' Market, held in Twisp every Saturday from April through October, sells locally grown produce. Don't miss a visit to Blue Star Coffee Roasters and Cinnamon Twisp Bakery, both in town.
The town of Winthrop, eight miles down State Route 20 from Twisp and still part of the Methow Valley, looks like a place locked in time - the main road was designed to look like a western town in the 1850s. here, you can take old photos, fish for trout on the Methow River, or sleep in a covered camper at the Winthrop KOA (from $142). For a comfier base camp, stay in one of the six Rolling Houses (from $135), design cottages in the valley, or the 18-room guesthouse at Mazama (from $150) near Madam. Be sure to fill up on gas there, because it's just off the North Cascades Highway next door.
