The first thing to know about finding cheap flights is that there is no magic bullet or secret ninja trick involved. There are many myths on the internet about how to find cheap flights. In fact, you've probably come across a ton of them while searching for the best flight deals!
Many websites employ terrible journalists who recycle common and outdated myths. Here are the most common ones that are not 100% true:
Airlines use advanced computers and pricing algorithms to set prices and maximize sales based on time of year, passenger demand, weather, major events/festivals, time of day, competitor prices, fuel prices and more. Those so-called "tricks" no longer work. The system is very smart. Throw them out. Let them die.

Don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. Anyone who talks to you has no idea what they are talking about. These myths will mislead you 100%.
Airfare varies greatly depending on the day of the week, time of year, and upcoming holidays such as Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving, or the 4th of July. August is a big month for European travel and everyone wants to go somewhere warm in the winter or travel when the kids are out of school.
In short, if you fly when everyone else is flying, your ticket will cost more.
Try to be flexible with dates. If you decide to visit Paris, go to Paris in the spring or fall when fewer people visit and plane tickets are cheaper.

What's more, it's almost always cheaper to fly midweek than on the weekend because most people travel on the weekend and then airlines raise prices. Prices are lower if you fly on or after a long holiday. Early morning or late night flights are also cheaper because fewer people want to travel then (who wants to get up early?!). Fridays and Mondays are expensive because that's when most business travelers fly.

It's good to have both when you fly, but if you really want to save more money and get cheaper flights for your trip, you need to be flexible on at least one or the other.
Airline search engines have made it really easy to search the entire world to find the cheapest ticket. You no longer need to search manually, city by city, day by day. Websites like Skyscanner and Google Flights offer search tools that allow you to put in your home airport and see a world map with all the flights there. This allows you to easily compare multiple destinations without having to consider every possible option. You might even find some interesting places you never thought of!

Flying low-cost airlines is a good alternative to flying the "big airlines" whenever possible. You get fewer benefits, but you can save a bundle on price.
Airline Booking Hacks: What Works, And What Might Get You In Trouble
Just pay attention to the fees. This is how they make money! Low-cost airlines charge fees for checked bags, carry-on bags, printing your boarding pass, using a credit card, and anything else. Be sure to add up the ticket price and fees to make sure the price is lower than a major carrier.
You should also double-check the location of the low-cost airline's airport at your intended destination. These airlines often fly to airports far from the actual city, with limited and expensive transportation options.
For example, a transfer to Beauvais, a low-cost airport for Paris, costs €29. If you're flying round-trip, that means you should add about €60 to your airfare to see how much you'll save by flying a budget airline.
Not only does it help to be flexible with dates and destinations, flexibility in the route you take is another way to get cheap flights. For example, flying to London and taking a budget airline to Amsterdam is sometimes cheaper than flying directly to Amsterdam from your departure city.
Tips To Help You Score The Cheapest Airfare
That's what I did when I went to Paris. The flight from the US was $900, but I was able to fly to Dublin for $600 and get a flight to Paris for $60. It meant more flight time, but the $240 I saved was worth it.
To use this method, find out how much it costs to fly directly to your destination. Then open Google Flights and type in the destination field to see prices for nearby airports. If the difference is more than $150, I ask how much it would cost to get from the other airport to my primary destination (either by cheap flight or by train, if it's not too far). You can use Rome2Rio to help you find the best way to get between the nearest airport and your primary destination.
You can also do this for checkout. It may be cheaper to fly from a nearby airport. I often find other airports to see if it's cheaper to fly/drive/train there and then fly to my final destination. Extra time may be allowed for long international flights!
