Gifted And Talented Education Programs - The Gifted and Talented Academy (G/T Academy) at Heartland AEA is a five-year professional development opportunity for gifted K-12 teacher teams and district educators.
Participants learn to review, develop, and improve their written Comprehensive Gifted and Talented Program plan and schedule. Teams meet throughout the year to review their current plans, discuss best practices in gifted education, and analyze data.
Gifted And Talented Education Programs
Before the first session of the Academy, team members must complete the survey and establish a talent and talent advisory service. Please bring your membership advisory list and a copy of the survey to session 1.
Schoolwide Enrichment Model (sem)
Participants review gifted program models and develop curriculum framework documents that include student goals/outcomes, strategies, resources, and assessment approaches.
How do we learn about gifted and talented programs, do what they were designed to do, and make a difference for the students they serve? These and other questions point to the need for high-quality talent and gifted assessment. This course helps participants develop their own program evaluation questions, identify the stakeholders and data sources most likely to provide insight into the answers, and determine the most effective ways to organize, analyze, communicate, and use these data. You must have attended years 1 and 2 to participate. There are many reasons why gifted education programs are so important. They keep the gifted child challenged and engaged. Educational programs connect gifted students to creativity and achievement for life. They are critical in helping gifted and talented children adjust socially to a world of less gifted and unsupportive peers and adults.
Educational programs for gifted children instill a love of learning and the knowledge and skills of how to learn. They prevent early dropout and support long-term career success.
Through the right education system with appropriate educational programs, the gifted child learns to overcome adversity, a life skill that will benefit the gifted child long after early education.
The Pros And Cons Of Gifted And Talented Programs
According to research studies, teachers have reported that their brightest students have not been challenged in the classroom and have not been given the opportunity to thrive.
There was a feeling that traditional educational programs were not well suited to the needs of gifted children. Typical programs were designed so that teachers could help struggling students. The programs were not designed for exceptional students, nor were the teachers trained to provide them with accelerated and enriching programs.
If the materials are not difficult or the pace is too slow, gifted students will lose interest very quickly. Because they absorb new information easily, a lot of repetition doesn't help them, but slows them down.
This boredom and disinterest can lead to a complete disruption of the learning process. Many gifted students have adjustment problems during the first years of school. As a result, about half of the gifted become intellectual dropouts by age 10.

A curriculum designed specifically for gifted students offers the best opportunity to develop their talents. Appropriate courses and projects that match individual student interests enable a high level of engagement and performance.
The gifted curriculum includes acceleration and enrichment. Acceleration allows the gifted student to advance faster than usual through subjects and courses. Courses can sometimes be skipped based on current knowledge and testing.
Early college admission is another example of acceleration. Some summer courses offer double enrollment for secondary school and university. At all school levels, gifted students progress as quickly as they master the required material.
Enrichment offers deeper involvement and a wider selection of materials and media. It may include extracurricular opportunities, internships, or summer camp programs.
Gifted And Talented Education (gate)
Enrichment programs may include a combination of disciplines such as reading, writing, art, acting or other creative skills. These programs reflect real-world experiences where multiple disciplines come together to form complex situations that require different perspectives.
Longitudinal studies have also shown that gifted programs have a positive impact on students' postsecondary plans and future education.
It found that talented young people are 50 times more likely to get a PhD than untalented students.
When this population was reexamined at age 38, nearly two-thirds were found to have a master's degree or higher. Of these, 44 percent had earned a doctorate. This can be compared to the general population, where 2% have a Ph.D.
Why School Districts Are Rethinking Gifted & Talented Programs
Beyond college and graduate school, there is more evidence of student success in gifted programs. Another study of intellectually gifted teenagers showed that distinctive skill patterns identified at age 13 indicated continued creative achievement into middle age.
These achievements were particularly notable in the areas of literary achievement and scientific/technical innovation. In the group studied, they had acquired 817 patents and published 93 books.
Children go to school to learn, not just new material, but how to learn. They need to be taught study skills and the self-discipline needed to concentrate and focus on the subject at hand. This is especially true for gifted children.
In addition to learning skills, the material is also important. Gifted children in a traditional setting will pick up new information easily and do very well on tests that are not difficult enough for them. However, they do not benefit from an intellectual challenge. What they need is adversity.
Can Ending Gifted And Talented Programs Desegregate Schools?
Learning to overcome adversity is important in school as a precursor to what these children will experience later in life. If the gifted aren't challenged and don't have to use the right study skills early on, they won't know how to tackle more difficult exams later on. They will not have the necessary resilience when faced with future setbacks or failures.
Gifted students often feel uncomfortable in the classroom with peers they consider different or unusual. They are rejected by other students, who often form cliques based on their own social expectations. The gifted felt excluded, often rejected and ridiculed.
When these gifted students are placed with other gifted students who think like them, have the same problems, and have the same love of learning, they feel very different.
You fit better. They know they will be understood and accepted. Their minds are kept busy and challenged, and they are less likely to be called out for disturbances.
Gifted And Talented Program / G & T Home
One of the main benefits of a gifted program is the improved self-image and confidence that gifted students display when they are around gifted peers.
Gifted children have multiple talents along with potential social and emotional problems that pose a complex assessment challenge. There are several aspects to consider and evaluate. Traditional schools may not have the training or assessment tools to properly assess the gifted child's strengths and weaknesses.
Gifted schools and programs understand the need to assess the whole child. They use a variety of tests and assessment tools to identify the right opportunities and measure progress. They monitor development on a number of different scales suitable for advanced students.
Educational programs for gifted and talented children are necessary because they address the learning, emotional, and social needs of these students while preparing them for life outside of school in a society that does not understand or accept them at all

Gifted programs provide students with opportunities to have enriching learning experiences in multiple curriculum areas and incorporate the Missouri Standards of Learning in core content areas, computer science, and fine arts. The unique academic, social, and emotional needs of gifted learners are addressed through the Missouri Gifted Learner Outcomes (MO-GLO). School districts can use MO-GLOs to develop learning outcomes for their gifted programs.
