Basic health insurance covers services that require medical attention, such as doctor visits, hospital stays and health check-ups Basic health insurance is required by law for all British Columbians (including international students) and is available through TheBC Medical Services Plan. (SME). A temporary solution for the waiting period during a coverage gap is a term insurance plan called guard.me.

Under the Medicare Protection Act, enrollment in a health plan (MSP) is mandatory for all eligible residents and their dependents.
If you are in British Columbia and have not yet done so, apply for the British Columbia Health Plan (MSP) immediately.
You can opt out of guard.me@temporary health plan if you are not using it. Visit guard.me@ before the deadline.

During the semester, you will receive a welcome email at guard.me@maq. This email will contain a link to log into your account and view your policy details. You can view and download the Health Care Access Card (HAC), which is proof of your coverage and will contain your name, student number, policy number, and policy start and end dates. You can also login via Guard.me@websaete.
This card can be used for direct payments at select pharmacies, medical clinics and dental offices. Be sure to keep it for future reference as you will need it for direct payment or claim. If you do not receive an email from hoguard.me@, please contact them at [email protected].
You are only enrolled in guard.me@ for your first term at . If you already have existing coverage under the British Columbia Health Plan (MSP) or other Canadian health insurance, are studying in a government sponsored scholarship program, or are located outside of Canada, you may opt out of being a supervisor. .me@ Design.

To successfully log out of Guard.me and BC MSP, you must provide proof of MSP, which must include a photo of your MSP card, as well as one of the following additional documents:
When visiting any clinic, print a copy of your Health Care Card (HAC) at guard.me@website. HAC is your insurance certificate containing your information. They will collect a copy for each visit and go directly to billguard.me@ on your behalf. No additional applications are required. You can find your preferred Guard.me clinics near your location here. These clinics will allow direct billing.
At clinics that do not allow direct billing, you will need to pay for your visit in advance. Keep copies of all payment receipts. To apply, visit guard.me@ to create an online account and upload copies of your receipts.

I received my BC Services Card (MSP card) before my first term ended. Can I apply for a refund for the 4 month plan?
You may be eligible for a refund of the unused portion of your insurance if you do not apply and there is more than 1 month of coverage left at the time of applying throughguard.me@. Your request for a partial refund must be received by guard.me@ before the last month of the period (i.e. April 1st, August 1st and December 1st). If approved, a portion of the refund will be credited to your account.
If you are a member of TSSU, in addition to the above, Human Resources will reimburse you for a portion of the Guard.me@ fees you paid for months of waiting for your MSP to be processed. For example, if your MSP in British Columbia starts on November 1st, HR will pay you for September and October. This is a separate process from canceling your Guard.me@ activity. Students residing in British Columbia for 6 months or more must enroll in a British Columbia Health Plan under the Medicare Protection Act. The waiting time for new residents is 2-3 months. For coverage during the waiting period, you can purchase private health insurance or contact International Student Services to learn about health insurance options.

If you qualify, you may apply upon arrival in British Columbia. Please note that for new residents there is a 2-3 month waiting period before coverage begins.
