We are encouraged to strike unsuspecting people. Daniel and I both brought masks and were prepared to watch the vehicles at a social distance.
It was a five hour drive to Vancouver, so we drove up the same day and stayed the night. That way we'll be in a good position to see the cars the next day. The next morning, Daniel and I drove to the Portland town of Clackamas to see the Rialta. Upon arrival, we found ourselves in some sort of RV storage. A fence surrounded the property, which was filled with motor homes and other vehicles in various states of repair. The seller was late so another employee let us in.
The Rialta was literally everything we hoped it would be. Daniel and I excitedly explored the interior, looking at the cabinets and playing with the accessories and furniture. We found a binder with detailed maintenance history and original manuals for the vehicle. It appears to be in pristine condition. We were excited.
But then things started to get a little weird. The engine will not start when we turn it on. After several attempts, it became clear that the vein was dead from the neck. Our host apologized and admitted that another employee had a habit of leaving keys in the fire. Obviously they have to move the car from time to time and sometimes the keys are left behind. It was a little strange, but it felt believable. So we stopped the truck and tried to start the Rialta.
After several futile attempts, we found our next red flag – the car was completely out of gas. We also noticed that the fuel cap was missing. Daniel and I looked at each other with growing concern. Anyway, what kind of place was it?

The salesman finally arrived 50 minutes after the agreed meeting time. He didn't look like I imagined. He was a young man - maybe in his twenties - with a nice car and an expensive watch. He didn't look like he was going to be into recreational vehicles, but then what did I know? However, this guy was knowledgeable about the Rialta and walked us through all the systems and operation of the car.
The salesman brought some gas and filled the tank. This time the car started right after we hit it. He grabbed the fuel cap from another car in the parking lot and soon we were ready to take it for a test drive.
At 21.6 feet long, the Rialta is very easy to drive. Daniel and I drove about 20 minutes on surface roads and highways. The car ran great and everything seemed fine. We loved each other.
Despite the red flags, Daniel and I decided to go ahead with the sale. We planned to pay in cash...but there was a catch. We were in such a hurry to get to Vancouver that we didn't even think to bring money with us. It was Saturday and all the banks were closed. Sigh. We have to wait until Monday when the banks reopen.

To make matters worse, there are no branches of our bank in the Portland/Vancouver area. The nearest branch was in Olympia, so we went there the next day. When we were in Olympia, we found a hotel that was near our bank. Bright and early on Monday morning, we went to the bank and finally got the funds we needed to bring the Rialta home.
After our visit to the bank, Daniel and I drove two hours back to Clackamas. The salesman was waiting for us and led us to a temporary office in a converted shed. We handed over the cash, which he carefully counted, then turned the title over.
