Living in a transition zone means growing up in either a hot climate or a cold climate in your area. Determining the type of grass in your lawn is important to keeping your lawn healthy and beautiful, however, it is not always easy to do. Knowing a few simple facts about each type of grass can help you determine what type of grass is in your lawn.

Warm-season grasses are dormant in cold weather. Warm-season grasses usually turn dark brown when soil temperatures drop below 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Warm-season grasses are the most drought-resistant types of grass and require a fraction of the amount of water that cool-season grasses require to survive in hot/dry climates.

Planting Grass Seed

Cool-season grasses go dormant in the heat of summer and begin to wither, wilt, and lose their vibrant colors in the cooler spring months. Regular watering with a sprinkler or irrigation system can keep these grass species green during the warmer months.

The prime planting season for cool-season grasses is in the spring and fall when the soil is between 50-65 degrees Fahrenheit.

It's no wonder that many types of cool-season grasses are mixed in to prevent diseases, pest problems and have a lawn that thrives in every area of your yard.

"Knowledgeable, professional and great service. Everything you could expect in a lawn care service and more. Thanks for all you do!" Herbalists know that different strains have different effects. Now easy, Spicoli. We are talking about turf grass. There are many varieties, suitable for different climates and with different properties that have different effects for you. This is a vast topic, too big to cover in a doctoral dissertation. Here, we present snippets, thumbnail insights from an expert.

His name is Sean Westcott. He is the club superintendent at Comanche Terrace in Kerrville, Texas. He's also an accomplished player and past winner of the Course Superintendents Association of America National Championship, an event that makes for some pretty darn good sticks. Expanding on his experience with — and competing with — a range of grasses, we asked Westcott for his Kerbin notes on six common types, as well as some details on how each game plays when properly maintained. .

When you hear top players talking about corn, they often talk about Bermuda. They are not wrong. A hardy, drought-tolerant, warm-weather piece that stretches south, Bermuda can get grainy. But that quality is resilient when the grass is mowed tightly, the way tour pros prefer. In that state, Westcott says, Bermuda provides a very strong, fast and accurate surface. It can also be pure play while stretching, providing the type of pillow that most enthusiasts want.

What Type Of Grass Do I?

The thing is, the bigger Bermuda gets, the more grain it exhibits, which can affect everything from fairway rollout to putt and break speed. When looking at the shot from the fairway, when you swing quickly, you may not notice the grain effect. But it is not neglected around vegetables. With chip shots in the grain, Bermuda is known for snagging clubs. Similarly, pitches under or over grain can make all the difference between a bird's charge remaining, long or short. As a rule of thumb, if the grass looks shiny, you are dealing with grain. If the tariff has a flat head, the grain is against you. Adjust accordingly.

Unlike your grandparents, Bent Grass has little interest in retiring to Florida. It is a cool-season grass with a thin blade that can be cut close. Compared to bermudagrass, bentgrass has a small grain. Like any other type of turf, it can play differently depending on the area and time of year. But in the spring and fall, especially, Westcott says, bentgrass in the Northeast is a thing of beauty, smooth, strong and moving quickly on fairways and greens.

Because bentgrass does not grow well in the heat, it needs more water when the temperature rises. Therefore, if you play on bentgrass in the height of summer, you may find that the greens and fairways are quite soft. When it dries out, bentgrass can start to show signs of stress by turning a little brown. But that doesn't mean it doesn't do a good job. In fact, Westcott says, bentgrass is often at its best when it's lightly stressed.

"Yes, he has fescue." Upon hearing that phrase, most of us think the golden grass is standing tall enough to swallow Ian Woosnam. Fescue is, after all, a weed of attachment, and it often inhabits uninhabited native areas where you don't want to hit your hair. But fescue can serve wonderfully as short grass, too, on fairways, greens and tees for all kinds of reasons.

How To Get Greener Grass

Course operators love it for its ease of maintenance. Slow growing, it requires more frequent cutting than other varieties. It also requires less water. As a level playing field, you could call it a cleaner preference, providing the stable, breezy conditions we think of when we picture across the pond.

If Zosia were a teenager, you could appreciate her position. It stands upright, creating a sweet lie in the clear. "The ball is designed so well for you, it's almost like cheating," Westcott said.

Zosia ... Oh, boy-oh! Why the grass in Bellevue - yes, the grass - is the unsung star of the show By: Michael Bamberger

A warm-season grass that is cold-resistant enough for transition zones, zoysia also requires little water, which allows it to be more robust than most grasses. It has less grain than Bermuda, so it goes for it. If there's a downside to maintenance, Westcott says, it's that zoysia is prone to disease, and protective applications can be expensive, making it impractical for courses on a tight budget.

Your Comprehensive Lawn Fungus Guide

However, from a player's perspective, Zosia can be fun. The only tricky thing is that Zosia can be "sticky," says Westcott. "Its blades are so hard and tight, you can think you've hit a perfect bump and run, and the grass will just catch your ball."

They love excuses, and Poa often acts as a scapegoat. An alternate logo for the PGA Tour could be a player pointing in frustration at a missed putt, blaming his poor stroke on the cold weather grass. The bad rap is rooted in reality. Poa grows quickly, and its seeds, which produce beans, germinate later than sorghum.

But no weed is perfect. And when Westcott talks about Poa, he becomes even more obsessed with his power. Not only does it tolerate low light and humid environments, poa also tolerates heavy traffic. With proper maintenance, poa can be played on almost any surface. "The winged leg has vegetables," says Westcott. "And you won't find better surfaces than these." (Poa is also found in Pebble and is the dominant strain in the fabled greens of Oakmont).

What's more, the same seedheads that some players worry about can be a plus, Westcott
