Like many DoD installations, Camp Lejeune dates back to World War II. In 1941, the War Department approved work on an 11,000-acre tract in Onslow County, North Carolina, to build the New River.
One of the satellite facilities, Montford Point, served as a training camp for blacks from 1942 to 1949. 20,000 black Americans trained there before being integrated into the full military. These days, Montford Point is called Camp Johnson. It is home to the Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools.

It was estimated that about 500,000 people were affected by the water. Now, the water is not good.
