Burdened by a large inventory of vehicles, Chrysler Jeep Dodge confirmed Wednesday that it is closing its southwest Las Vegas facility, laying off 118 workers.

The service department will be closed Saturday, said Dave Wick, general manager and corporate treasurer. The company will keep the facility open until May 29 so it can complete planned sales and service transactions.
A statement from the company said the owners tried to keep the business open. "Unfortunately, the situation at the local and national level prevents finding such a solution," the statement said.
"We understand that losing a job, especially in this economic climate, is a painful event, and we want to do everything we can to help our people manage the difficult situation," Wick said in a statement. The local new car dealership sector began shrinking last September when Bill Hurd Chevrolet and Vista Chevrolet Hurd closed, along with other Hurd dealerships across the country.
A Kansas car dealer relaunched the Vista in December, renaming it the Ed Bozarth Nevada #1 Chevrolet. Since then Desert Dodge and Centennial Hyundai have closed their doors.

Longtime Chrysler salesman Tom Saita sold the Integrity dealership to partner Greg Basant in 2006. Basant is president of Integrity Chrysler Corporation, according to corporate records with the Nevada Secretary of State.
The Saitta Family Trust, including Thomas and Alice Saitta as trustees, owns the 11.4-acre dealership, according to records in the Clark County Assessor's Office.

While it may have been profitable during the boom years, Integrity Chrysler is clearly facing an interest expense crush due to the economic crash and slowing auto sales. Funding for inventory alone probably runs $250,000 per month, according to sources.
Chrysler's announcement of integrity noted a "dramatic reduction in sales and difficulties in the credit market." Industry executives expect Chrysler LLC, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 30, to ship many of the dealership's vehicles for sale in other parts of the country instead of building a monopoly in the local market.
Integrity was supposed to be closed for weeks. Some insurance companies have stopped sending vehicles to Integrity Chrysler for repairs because the dealership may close before the work is completed, according to an industry source.
A week ago, Chapman Dodge ran an ad on KKLZ-FM, 96.3, which serves Integrity Chrysler customers.
