The San Diego Convention Center will become a temporary shelter for many unaccompanied children seeking asylum, authorities announced Monday.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher said they responded to a request from federal Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra seeking temporary housing for children arriving at the border without parents.

"The city and county support this federally funded effort by providing vital services to these vulnerable children who have come to our country seeking safety," they said in a statement. "We are working closely with our federal partners to finalize the details to prepare to receive these youth and provide them with care, compassion and a safe transition space until they are reunited with families or sponsors."
Officials did not provide information on the number of children, where they are coming from or where they are likely to go.
They said the site will be used for about three months. Each child is expected to stay there for an average of 30-35 days. They get food, medical care, a place to sleep and a shower.
Authorities are setting up a safe rest area outside the facility, but children will not be allowed to leave the convention center until they are reunited with family or guardians.

Gloria and Fletcher said some of the children were separated from their families during the trip, some are orphans and others were sent by parents hoping to escape dangerous conditions in their homelands. Authorities did not have information on how many children to place there as they await the asylum process.
"Every child in our care deserves a safe place to rest and know that their well-being is being cared for," Becerra said in a statement. "The County and City of San Diego have generously offered to work with the Department as we follow the law to provide food, sanitation and shelter to unaccompanied children. Our mission is to protect the health and safety of unaccompanied children in the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement as they go through the immigration process.
The plan to provide shelter for unaccompanied children comes as local agencies end Operation Shelter to Home, which provided temporary housing to the homeless at the San Diego Convention Center during COVID-19.
Over the past year, the effort has sheltered more than 4,000 people and helped nearly 1,300 people and 43 families find long-term housing, officials said. All remaining residents will be offered beds in the city's shelter system as Operation Shelter Home ends this week.

On August 28th at 5:30 p.m., we leave for a seductive dinner on beautiful Coronado Island. From the convention center, we take a 15-minute ferry ride to Coronado Island. You can walk past many shops and restaurants, see the sights and see the San Diego skyline across the bay. Then we will meet for dinner near the port.
We will then take the ferry back to the San Diego Convention Center, where you can take a 10-minute walk to Seaport Village. This is an iconic village in downtown San Diego with lots of local shops and views. Being downtown, the end of the night will be close to most of the participants' hotels.
We believe this event will provide a greater networking opportunity for our attendees as we have a larger turnout. Each participant pays their own fee of US$50, which includes both the ferry ride and dinner.

The San Diego City Council has decided to fight in court to secure Measure C funding for downtown convention center expansion, homeless services and road repairs.
In 2020, 65% of voters approved the measure to increase taxes paid by hotel guests. That's less than the two-thirds majority needed for most new taxes, but several California court rulings have held that citizens' initiatives require only a simple majority.
Despite those rulings, a San Diego Superior Court judge recently concluded that the city erred in its handling of Measure C.
Mayor Todd Gloria welcomed the council's decision Tuesday, saying after the meeting that approval of the measure was "the will of the voters," even though a two-thirds majority was missing.

"The vast majority of San Diego residents supported Measure C to create a dedicated funding stream to address homelessness, grow the local economy and clean up the streets -- priorities shared by city leadership and all of our city's communities," Gloria said. "This challenge confirms the passage of Measure C so that we can fulfill the will of the voters and get to work solving our city's big challenges."
In closed session, the council voted 6-3 to continue the appeal. Council President Sean Elo-Rivera and council members Monica Montgomery Steppe and Vivian Moreno voted against the recall.
Moreno said that since the original ballot materials said Measure C needed a two-thirds vote to pass, the city should be on board.
Only visitors to hotels and other accommodations would pay the tax increase provided for by the measure as part of the city's temporary use tax.
