Homes In Carson City Nv - Ten years ago, we were on a walking tour of historic properties in Carson City, Nevada and came upon the Ferris Mansion, built in 1863.
Dave's great-grandfather (his father's parents) was Asa Ferris Cogswell. Asa's daughter (and Dave's great aunt), Helen Cogswell Trostel, wrote a Cogswell genealogy book and explained how her father was related to George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., the inventor of the Ferris wheel. The book is set in Casa Grande and neither our memories nor Internet searches can provide details of Asa and George's relationship, but we'll find out about that later.

George Washington Gale Ferris was an agronomist who imported a large number of oriental trees for many homes in Carson City and possibly planted some trees on the grounds of the Nevada State Capitol. One source credits him with planting the blue spruce as the state's official Christmas tree. His son, George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. He was the inventor of the Ferris wheel.

The Ferris wheel was commissioned by the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It will be a landmark for the fair that will surpass the Eiffel Tower of the Paris Exhibition. [Photo from New York Times archives]
The wheel is 300 feet high and 825 feet in circumference. It weighs 4000 tons and has 36 cars that can seat 40 people. It brought 1.5 million people and more than 10,000 revolutions to the fair during its 19 weeks. Each ride costs 50¢ and takes 20 minutes.
Our wanderings in Carson City took us to a school designed in 1909 by George Ashmead Ferris, who may not have been related to George Washington Gale Ferris Sr. or Jr. Interesting, though. George Ashmead Ferris also designed the Governor's Mansion in Carson City.
