After we thoroughly test the base version of the Apple MacBook Air 2020, including the new M1 processor, we will look at the more expensive model with a more powerful 8-core GPU and a larger 512 GB SSD. The premium is now around €260, but is it worth it?

We noticed that the screen hinge on our current tester was cracking. From the noise, it sounds like there is aluminum foil in the hinge. However, the function is not limited to this. This is the first time we've seen anything like this on a MacBook, and we'll either return it or request a replacement from the retailer.

Why You Shouldn't Charge Your Macbook Pro From The Left Hand Side

Our tester's 512GB PCIe SSD is available in the entry-level model with 7 GPU cores for an additional €224. Transfer speeds have improved significantly over the older MacBook Air and are now generally on par with MacBook Pro models.

Compared to the 256GB drive, the transfer speed when reading data is almost the same, but the 512GB SSD has an advantage of about 400 MB/s when writing data. But you don't notice it in your daily life.

The graphics card is the biggest difference, as the base version should have 7 cores, while the more expensive Air gets a faster version with 8 cores. So there is no difference from MacBook Pro 13 M1 with 8 GPU core M1 chip.

As expected, the Air with 8 GPU cores is slightly ahead of the base version with 7 cores in benchmarks, but we're mostly in the single digits here, with the biggest difference being 12%. The more expensive MacBook Air is almost equal to the more expensive MacBook Pro 13 M1. Like the cheaper Air M1, it easily passes the 3DMark Wild Life stress test.

You won't notice the difference in everyday use. If you don't want to use the MacBook Air for gaming, you can easily get the basic version with 7 core GPU.

We've only tested simulated titles so far, so gaming benchmarks still need to be treated with a bit of caution. Interestingly, the MacBook Air is always slightly ahead of the MacBook Pro 13. We checked the result several times, but the value did not change. However, to compare the chips, we have to wait for the games running on the M1 MacBooks. No issues with available iOS titles.

And there is no significant difference in surface temperature. Despite the passive cooling (and high performance), the value is completely within the limits and is absolutely unquestionable. You can place the MacBook Air M1 on your lap while it's charging.

(±) The average temperature at the top during heavy loads is 37.2 °C. By comparison, the device class average for the v7 sub-laptop heats up to 30.7 degrees Celsius.

(±) We measure a maximum value of 43.7 ° C in the lower part (compared to an average of 39.5 ° C).

(+) We measure an average temperature of 22.9 ° C at the top without load. The average temperature in the classroom reaches 30.7 ° C.

(+) The ball of the hand and the contact surface reach a maximum of 35.5 ° C, which is the normal temperature of the skin, so it does not feel hot.

To be safe, we repeated the wireless LAN battery life test with another MacBook Air, but after a few minutes, the results were the same. Our tester lasts more than 16 hours in a wireless LAN test with a screen brightness of 150 cd/m²; almost 9 hours at full brightness. So this again shows that the screen is the biggest consumer.

Basically, the same pros and cons apply to testing the base version of the more expensive MacBook Air 2020 M1. With the M1 processor, the MacBook Air is significantly improved. For one thing, performance is on par with the MacBook Pro 13, which has two Thunderbolt ports and has eliminated the annoying fan of older models. The display has also been improved, now supporting a larger P3 color space, and the PCIe SSD is faster. The new Air 2020 may be the most comprehensive MacBook in years.

If you want 256 GB, without hesitation, you can get the basic model for 1,100 euros. In everyday use, you hardly notice the extra performance of the 8-core GPU.

Which Air model you choose shouldn't depend on the iGPU, because to be honest, the difference between the two versions (7-core and 8-core) is so small that you won't notice any difference in day-to-day stuff. Instead, you should consider how much SSD storage you need. If you have 256 GB of storage, you can use the basic model without hesitation. On the other hand, if you prefer 512GB, you should get the pre-configured model for €1,360 including the 8-core GPU. We suspect there will be better deals on the standard models (256GB + 7-core GPU or 512GB + 8-core GPU) in the future.

The new Apple MacBook Air 2020 with M1 processor is available in most online stores and costs €1,360 from our lender Cyberport. The basic model with a 7-core GPU costs around 1100 euros.
