The most recent crime data from the FBI shows that violent crimes in the United States increased by 5.6 percent in 2020. The homicide rate rose 30 percent, the largest one-year increase on record.

Given that crime has been on the decline for the past 30 years, this is certainly a cause for concern. Although, given the anger and stress that has gripped the country in recent years and seen anecdotally and now empirically, this is not entirely surprising.

This includes the economic, medical and psychological damage associated with the evolving Covid-19 pandemic. With political, social and racial tensions reaching a boiling point in recent years, witness the anniversary of violence at the US Capitol on January 6.

Wayland, Massachusetts, a city of less than 14,000 people about 20 miles west of Boston, has the lowest crime rate at 7.22 per 100,000. The city's low score is based on violent crime, aggravated assault. Northport, New York is second at 27.56. New York State is home to 10 of the 25 safest cities in America.

Among the 25 lowest-performing cities, a total of 40 crimes were reported in 2020. These communities number approximately 92,000 people. Ten cities and New York City make the list, while Colorado and Wisconsin have two each. 14 states are in the top 25 list.

As we can see, smaller communities tend to have lower crime rates, while larger communities tend to have lower crime rates. However, there are several large US cities with at least half a million residents that had lower crime rates in 2020 than the US as a whole.

Overall, the United States had a crime rate of 2,356.7 per 100,000 in 2020, while the four largest cities—El Paso, San Diego, New York, and Mesa—had lower total crime rates. . in 2020

Among large cities, El Paso has the lowest overall crime rate, and eight of the 10 largest cities with the lowest crime rates have seen crime decrease over the past decade. El Paso's overall crime rate has dropped 46 percent over the past decade, with modest increases in San Jose and Los Angeles (only 4 percent each).

United States Incarceration Rate

Looking at cities with populations between 150,000 and 500,000, Port St. Lucie, Florida has the lowest crime rate, followed by Cary, North Carolina, and Santa Clarita, California.

However, many mid-sized cities with low crime rates have seen crime declines similar to large cities. For example, Port St. Lucie posted a 63 percent drop in overall crime, the largest drop of any city in its population group (Lardo, Texas, also had a 63 percent drop in overall crime).

All 10 medium-sized cities with the lowest crime rates in 2020 saw their rates decrease since 2011. In fact, only 17 of the 121 cities in this group experienced an increase in overall crime over the past decade.

States With Lowest Crime Rates

Of the 1,278 cities with a population between 50,000 and 149,999, Franklin, Massachusetts has the lowest crime rate at just 110.9 per 100,000. Consistent with the downward trend in crime rates we noted, nine out of 10 cities saw overall crime declines over the past decade (2011 data were not available for Marshfield, Massachusetts). Long Beach, New York had the biggest drop among these cities, with an 81 percent drop in overall crime.

The city with the lowest crime rate in most states has a lower overall crime rate than the nation as a whole, at 2,356.7 per 100,000 people. Two exceptions to this are Washington, D.C., which does better than most states in terms of urban population density, and Illinois, where the FBI missed important data.

The agency's 2020 report for Illinois did not include data on arson and burglary. Because burglary-theft, which includes things like shoplifting, is the most common crime in the United States, we only included one city in Illinois . So, by default, according to our findings, Rockford is the safest and most dangerous city in Illinois.

In addition to these problems, there is a large difference in crime rates when looking at the safest cities in each state. Even in neighboring countries, the differences can be stark. For example, the city with the lowest crime rate in California is Rolling Hills, with a crime rate of 325.6 per 100,000 people. Oregon's safest city is Vernonia, which has a crime rate nearly three times higher at 871.8 per 100,000.
