WEST PALM BEACH— A retired actor with a bad back and a Massachusetts resident are among dozens of seniors whose homes have been renovated under a program run by Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County.

The West Palm Beach-based nonprofit, which works to provide opportunities for low-income families, launched its Aging in Place program two years ago in an effort to help seniors stay in their homes for as long as possible.

More than 78 percent of the families helped through Habitat for Humanity's Aging in Place program are over 50 years old, but most of them are 60 or older, said Bernie Godek, the group's senior director.
"We're talking to seniors, and AARP has talked to seniors, and they don't want to leave their homes," Godek said. "They want to age in the home they live in. They're afraid of being homeless, and they don't want to go to an assisted living facility or a nursing home.
"This gives them the ability to live in the right place, in a house they've had for 20, 30, 40 years."
Seniors Home Supports Program
Sandy Matkivich has lived in her three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Spencer Lakes west of West Palm Beach, off Village Boulevard west of Interstate 95, for 34 years, and has kept herself for most of it.
But the work became too important for the 77-year-old, who spent years in the sales industry in his native Massachusetts and in Florida.
With her house in need of fresh paint, a new door, exterior washing and a broken front porch, she decided to turn to Habitat after talking to a neighbor who fixed it up to his house through the company.
"The next thing I knew, there were people upstairs painting my house," he said. "They did a great job. I can't say enough about Habitat for Humanity and what they do. They let me stay in my home."

Elias Eliades is equally grateful to the company for renovating his 1,200-square-foot West Palm Beach home, built in 1947.
The 66-year-old actress, who recently retired from her career due to degenerative scoliosis, struggled to rehabilitate herself and asked Habitat for help.
The group provides treatment, seals a door, closes a door and mailbox, and converts a bathtub into a walk-in shower.
"The walk-in shower is really nice," Eliades said. "I laughed the first time I used it, because it's good for my health. I've had two slips and falls in the last 2 1/2 years, and I ended up in the ER. I fell for a guy. other times, so I was considered a problem. ."
How The Rebuilding Together Houston Home Repair Program Works
Home repairs are free through Habitat for Humanity's Aging in Place program. Homeowners are asked to contribute part of the cost of repairs, ranging from 10 to 60 percent. Some exceptions are made for those who cannot afford to pay anything, said Godek.
"Their little skin in the game is important," Godek said. "It's a very successful program."
This month, Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County received $320,000 from the Fredrick A. DeLuca Foundation to expand and support its Aging in Place program.
Habit for Humanity of Palm Beach County, founded in 1986, is a non-profit organization.
