The best option to save money on public transport is to buy a discount STM OPUS card - and become a student with these eco-transport options and a 4-month pass, designed with students in mind, for one semester.
Fares are charged by journey, not by distance, so if you buy a ticket, there is a fixed ticket for each journey. Tickets can be purchased from an authorized vendor or in metro stations from station agents or from one of STM's vending machines. Buying tickets on buses (full change required) can be done when boarding the machine. You must hold your own ticket to transfer between buses and subways.
Montréal has an ever-expanding network of bike lanes, making cycling an affordable, environmentally friendly and efficient way to get around the city. And if you save energy - you can take your bike on the subway and some buses. Maps and cycling tools can be found through Vélo Québec, Montréal On Wheels and La Route Verte.
