Walmart Vision Center Shelbyville Tn - Here's a statistic to consider the next time you're standing in a crowd: 64 percent of US adults—more than 157 million people—wear prescription glasses. Since Walmart is the nation's top manufacturer of finished glasses, most of the glasses came from Walmart. In fact, it's the only product we make in-house from start to finish.
Earlier this year, we announced a $10 million investment to upgrade manufacturing equipment at our optical lab in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Similar improvements are planned for facilities in Crawfordsville, Indiana and Dallas over the next few years.

When Walmart first entered the optical business in 1991, Walmart was known for its low prices on lenses, similar to other department stores and eyeglass chains. Then, in 2000, Walmart started offering premium lenses like Carl Zeiss. Customers noticed the difference - and the company's quest to become a leader in eyewear quality continued.
"Walmart was at the forefront of putting anti-reflective and anti-scratch coatings on lenses," said Ed Green, recently retired CEO of the Vision Council and former president of Carl Zeiss Optical Inc., maker of -Carl Zeiss lenses.
When Walmart first invested in reflective equipment in 2001, Ed said, other major retailers either didn't have the coating or were using no-name or store-brand products. From the beginning, Walmart has taken steps to offer the best products on the market—products that exceed industry standards. Ongoing updates continue the commitment.

Production in the laboratory works 24 hours a day, more than 620 employees work in shifts. The record for the production of glasses in a day in the laboratory: 11,000 pairs.
A single pair of glasses begins its journey on a conveyor belt, where the lenses are shaped to the appropriate thickness and curve by a generator and polisher before undergoing multiple coating processes for high levels of scratch resistance and anti-reflex. From there, the lenses are manually placed into frames by "fitters". (Quality control is in place at all times; if any defects are found, the process starts over.) It takes about eight hours from start to finish.
Walmart is replacing all of its anti-reflective equipment (remember, this is the first major differentiator for the optical business) with new machines, so customers experience less glare. Coating machines and peripherals are also being replaced to improve quality and capacity, so the lab can produce more glasses and serve more customers.
The real difference, of course, is what our customers can experience and shop at the 3,000 Vision Centers in Walmart and Sam's Clubs stores. In addition to lenses made by Walmart, Vision Centers sells high quality lenses from Nikon, Seiko, and Zeiss. The selection of frames is extensive and includes designer frames such as Drew Barrymore's recently released Flower Row.

What attracts customers: Walmart's low prices. Our glasses start at $38 for a complete set of glasses and come with a one-year warranty - other retailers charge extra. Considering the average price of prescription glasses in 2014 was $274.20, shoppers can save big at Walmart, according to the Vision Council. David Puchala, licensed in New York, optical and vision center manager at 1744 Webster, New York, New York, agrees.
“The greatest reward,” says David, “is seeing the smile on a mother's face when she is charging $200 or more for her son's first pair of glasses elsewhere, and then comes to us and pays less than $70. " .

The website Walmart uses to sell glasses and contacts is the same as its main site, and is limited to features specific to the vision center. Aside from choosing the brands and price points you want, it's not easy to navigate through the options.
Overall, the design choices made on their website and the inability to order prescription glasses online make it appear that Walmart designed their vision centers primarily with physical customers in mind.
