Population change can be seen in terms of the components of change. There are three components to change: birth, death, and migration. Changes in population due to births and deaths are often combined and called natural increase or natural change. Populations grow or shrink depending on whether they gain people faster than they lose them. Studying the county's unique combination of natural variability and migration provides insight into why its population is changing and how quickly it is changing.
Migration is the movement of people from one area to another. This is often expressed as net migration, which is the difference between how many people move into and out of an area. When net migration is positive, a population moves more people in than out. We divide migration into internal and international migration.
Internal migration refers to people moving between US regions and is often one of the largest contributors to population change. Use the interactive table to explore interesting countries.
Is Cattaraugus County Leading The Way To Greater Western New York Independence?
International migration refers to people moving into and out of the United States and includes a diverse group of people, including foreign immigrants from many countries around the world, members of the US Armed Forces, and US citizens working abroad. In some areas, such as the Houston metro area, growth is due in part solely to international migration.
County-to-county migration can be analyzed using the American Community Survey's 5-year migration flow estimates. Although origin and destination patterns of migration are important in developing projections, origin and destination data are directly summarized in the specific migration data used in this section.
The change analysis component is a brilliant way to understand how the US population has changed over time. Looking at counties across the country, we can first identify groups of counties that are growing (or shrinking) due to migration and others that are growing due to natural growth.
