The increase of nine cents from January 2021 is due to a constitutional amendment from 2004 which ensures that the salary increase relates to the cost of living. In addition to the recent hourly increase, Florida's minimum wage will face a series of big increases starting with a big jump to $10 effective September 30, 2021. This significant change was made possible because the constitutional amendment is set to eventually achieve the state minimum. pay. which equates to $15 per hour by 2026. Florida Just Passed A $15 Minimum Wage. Is It Time For A Nationwide Hike?
Looking at State Labor Law records dating back to the early 2000s, Florida does not have a state minimum wage [4]. The federal minimum wage of $5.15 was in effect from 2000 to 2004. Later in 2005, Florida introduced a minimum wage of $6.15.
After a series of small increases, Florida continued to hit the federal minimum for the next 5 years. In 2010, Florida's state wage became the same as the federal minimum wage.
In 2012, the minimum wage increased to $7.67 which is above the federal minimum wage. It has continued to rise steadily to reach over $8 an hour in 2015 (see data above) and until recently $8.56 in 2019/2020 and $8.65 in 2021.
