When Arizona schools are closed, not all students learn equally. Schools across the state face challenges in providing computers and internet to students who need it most.

For Mesa Public Schools, the state's largest school district with 64,000 students, this "digital divide" has been particularly acute at the elementary level, as schools like Jefferson Elementary are giving out school laptops to older students.

In Mesa, nearly 9,000 students in kindergarten through sixth grade do not have a device at home and 7,000 elementary school families do not have Internet access. During the last few months of school, these students were at risk of using paper packets instead of online learning tools accessible to their classmates.
The City of Mesa and Mesa Public Schools plan to change that by making technology accessible to all Mesa students before the start of the next school year. The city has allocated $7 million in federal coronavirus aid to buy computers and Internet access for Mesa Elementary School students.
"Owning the equipment, having the technology that we need for distance learning is now a reality, so we have to make sure that kids in Mesa are disadvantaged," said Mayor John Giles.
"Since March 16th, our world has changed completely," said Andy Forlis, the new principal of Mesa Public Schools.

Within two weeks, all education was digital or distance. This change has revealed gaps in resource routing and access in the system. While coming to school to learn may have bridged the gap between students from these diverse backgrounds, homeschooling has made them worse.
While some Mesa students have multiple devices and strong Internet at home, many others do not have computers or tablets and Internet access.
According to Forlis, all high school students take home a school computer every day, and middle school students were given refurbished devices during the outbreak. This has left elementary school students relying on technology they may have at home.
Montes said many of her students don't have the technology to use for distance learning, but they often don't even have to compete for screen time with several other siblings who share a single computer at school.

For kids who don't have devices, some teachers have started texting students to fill out a separate sheet of paper and send a photo to the teacher. Even for families with devices, Montes spent hours with parents and students helping them with logins and technical issues.
The district learned that Forlis students' learning skills are "significantly impaired" if they don't have the tools to connect to school forums.
Students said the devices not only help them keep up with their studies, but also help them stay socially connected with teachers, schools, counselors and social workers.
"We see technology access and Internet access as a critical balance not only for learning, but also for the services our community provides to our families and students," Forlis said.

Montes said having all students have their own devices and access to the Internet at home will help them transition into the next school year.
"We don't know what's going to happen. What if we start face-to-face the first week and something happens and we have to close again? At least every one of our kids can have online education." he said.
"This will actually be half the fight we've seen, and it will further close the gap between our less fortunate children and our more fortunate children," Montes said. They are trained on these systems."
The city provides approximately 9,500 devices to students and 7,000 Internet plans to families. The devices also include Mesa students who attend Gilbert Public Schools in Mesa.

Council members all seem to support the initiative. Council member David Luna said distance learning will remain important next year as the pandemic is not over and some students will continue to learn from home.
Councilor Jane Duff said this program will develop broader goals for the future, such as improving education and creating a skilled workforce that will increase future economic development and regional prosperity.
"I personally think education is the greatest stabilizer in our society," he said. "I think it's given us the ability for these kids to be able to learn at a distance when they have a disability in this case. I wish the program the best of luck and I hope you bridge this gap."
Mesa officials hope the effort will spark a broader conversation about expanding citywide Internet access. According to City Manager Chris Brady, Mesa lags behind many major cities when it comes to citywide broadband access. The city may consider expanding its connectivity in the city and possibly expanding its fiber channel infrastructure in the city.

Mesa High School is the oldest high school in Mesa, Arizona and home of the Jackrabbits. Mesa High has over 3,200 students and boasts award-winning athletics, music, theater programs and more.

On December 26, 1907, the high school district in Mesa was reorganized as the Mesa Union High School District.
The city council leased the entire block 20 to the University of Arizona for 99 years for use as an experimental farm. This was land bounded by Cter St and MacDonald, Second and Third Aves. It didn't take long for me to figure out that the suspension wasn't good enough. On January 4, 1908, they sold it to the school district for $75. Construction of the building known as "Old Mother" began immediately. The class of 1909 graduated from the first twelve-room building. The school had an auditorium on the main floor and a swimming pool in the basement. The hall was used for meetings and had folding chairs for the early seats and standing room only for the rest. Twenty years later, eight rooms and a small hall-gym were added. During basketball games, spectators are seated in the balcony (above the first class) or in the arena because the gym is not large enough for standing room.
In September 1932, Zedo Ishikawa, a soccer player, was accidentally shot in the chest while trying to break up a fight between two dogs. As he was about to die, he said, "Tell Coach Cucci and the boys to keep going." Over time, the stalls began to repeat the theme "Continue" to each other. It eventually became the school's official motto.
