You've seen an external graphics card (eGPU) that works with a Mac and tried to get one, but quickly realized it was confusing. Procedure. I was in your shoes I've spent hundreds of hours learning everything about an external GPU and how to set it up with my MacBook Pro. Through this endeavor, I met two recognized eGPU pioneers and experts, Nando and Goalque. Together we built eGPU.io, the first and only forum for external graphics cards.
The purpose of this post is to provide Mac users with a comprehensive beginner setup guide to create an external GPU for their computers. As new Macs and Thunderbolt eGPU cases become available, I'll update this guide with the latest information. To get started, you need the following hardware:
External graphics cards work with all Thunderbolt equipped Macs. The 2011 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt first generation and the latest 2016 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 can both harness the power of the eGPU. In my experience, a Mac with only integrated graphics is easier to set up with an external GPU. Mac models marked with an asterisk (*) indicate that their default feature is discrete graphics. The table below lists all Mac computers with Thunderbolt connectivity.

Before you get too excited about your Mac's eGPU compatibility, you should know that Apple has never announced external graphics card capabilities as an official feature of its computers. Apple doesn't fully support creating and using an eGPU with your Mac; The Genius Bar is sure to turn you away when you bring your external GPU case to the Apple Store. The eGPU.io forum is a good place to ask questions about eGPU setup.
The development of an external GPU in Mac OS was a process of modifying system files to allow support for external graphics cards. Future versions of Mac OS may break the existing eGPU activation process. At present,
Most Thunderbolt enclosures with a PCIe slot can communicate with Mac OS (10.9 to 10.12). A Thunderbolt 2 enclosure like the AKiTiO Thunder2 works directly with all 1st and 2nd generation Thunderbolt Macs because the physical connector is the same and Thunderbolt 2 (TB2) is backward compatible with Thunderbolt (TB1). The introduction of the MacBook Pro in late 2016 brought Thunderbolt 3 (TB3) and a new type of connector in physical form, USB-C. The Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) and Thunderbolt Adapter enables forward and backward compatibility. This adapter allows TB1 and TB2 Macs to use TB3 cases and TB3 Macs to use TB2 cases.
Choosing a Thunderbolt 2 enclosure is very easy as there are only a handful of them. The AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe expansion box is the cheapest and most commonly used for the eGPU build. Other TB2 cases suitable for the eGPU setup are: OWC Mercury Helios, Sonnet Echo Express III-D, Netstor NA211TB-LD.

You have many more options for a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure. Since the arrival of the late 2016 MacBook Pro in October 2016, a new Thunderbolt 3 enclosure seems to have hit the market every month. Intel is working flat out to promote the Thunderbolt 3/USB-C connectivity standard. With the thinner and lighter design language across the industry, the need for expansion boxes is at an all-time high. Below is a list of the most popular Thunderbolt eGPU cases currently available in 2017.
I used the AKiTiO node, which is a ready-to-use eGPU case. I reviewed this Thunderbolt 3 case and recommend it for first-time eGPU builds. The AKiTiO Node is currently the most affordable solution and accommodates almost every graphics card on the market, including liquid-cooled graphics cards. It also has a built-in 400W power supply. Another key feature is the Texas Instrument TI83 USB-C controller. Thunderbolt 3 enclosures with a TI83 controller are preferred due to native support in macOS Sierra 10.12.
Another great option is the Mantiz Venus Thunderbolt 3 case. It has more features and gets my recommendation for pairing with a late 2016 MacBook Pro. With 5x standard USB 3.0 ports, 1x Ethernet port, 1x SATA III port and 87W charging power over a single Thunderbolt cable, the Mantiz Venus is the ultimate Thunderbolt 3 eGPU docking station.
All Thunderbolt 2 enclosures and Thunderbolt 3 enclosures with the older TI82 controller are not supported and have a more difficult time communicating with macOS. Kid2010 discovered on the Netkas forums that this is a software block that Apple introduced with 10.12.1. Fortunately, he found a solution to circumvent this limitation. If your Thunderbolt enclosure shows "Not Supported" under System Information > Thunderbolt Device Tree, download and run TB3-Enabler. After running this script, your Thunderbolt enclosure will display the message "Supported" and be able to communicate with macOS. Mac OS 10.9 to 10.11 do not include this Thunderbolt software block.

The next step is to get the Mac to recognize that an external GPU is connected to the case. Goalque discovered a solution and developed an Automat eGPU script to simplify this process. The script modifies existing Mac OS system files to allow detection of an external graphics card connected through a Thunderbolt enclosure. automate-eGPU.sh v1.0.0 is the latest version supporting Mac OS 10.9 to 10.12. As mentioned earlier, Apple has not officially released this eGPU feature for Mac, so this step must be performed every time you update the Mac operating system.
Aside from enabling external GPU detection in Mac OS, the automated eGPU script also makes it easier to install the graphics card driver. Some AMD Radeon graphics cards have native and partially working drivers on macOS, while Nvidia GeForce graphics cards use Nvidia's web drivers. Running the automate-eGPU.sh v1.0.0 script will load the appropriate Mac OS drivers for your AMD GPU or install web drivers for your Nvidia GPU.
On April 11, 2017, Nvidia released the long-awaited online drivers for Pascal graphics cards. The drivers are currently in beta, but will still allow Macs to use GTX 10 series GPUs. Here's a list of graphics cards, sorted from newest to oldest, that we think work with macOS Sierra 10.12.
The most common problems with external GPU builds come from an incorrectly connected power supply. Without enough power, maintaining a functional eGPU is a headache. It is best to use a Thunderbolt case with an integrated power supply of at least 350W. For Thunderbolt cases without an integrated power supply, you can either use the Dell DA-2 220W Power Brick (for GPUs that require less than 150W TDP) or
