Used car dealers and internet sellers tend to get a bad rap, and the same goes for people selling cars online.
Craigslist has a local feel, but that doesn't mean everyone who posts a car for sale is acting like a neighbor. While there are many genuine people looking to sell their car one-on-one instead of trading it in, there are also scammers looking to sell you a car that doesn't exist or in bad condition is for your money.
"Consumers have been victims of fraudulent auto transactions since Henry Ford opened up shop," Florida consumer protection attorney Donald E. Peterson told Business Insider.
We asked consumer protection experts about the biggest scams people should watch out for when buying a car on Craigslist, and here's what they had to say.
New & Used Nissan Dealer
This is one of the biggest things to look for in Craigslist postings: a car that doesn't actually exist. Fraudsters copy and paste images from real posts, then create fake listings in dozens of cities.
Be wary of salespeople who are reluctant to meet in person and don't spend money on a car you've never seen. Catherine Hutt, director of communications for the Better Business Bureau, told Business Insider that she's seen similar photos listed on dozens of sites around the country. "Who knows where the original car is?" she said. "The scammer used the same photo multiple times with multiple victims."
To find out if the car you see is real, BBB recommends copying the image from the listing and doing a reverse image search on Google. If a car appears on multiple sites in multiple cities, you can bet it's a fake.
The same goes for text: fraudsters don't always want to create a new listing for every car. Type the Craigslist description snippet into Google and see if other ads use the same words.
Craigslist Drops Claim Of Exclusive License To Posts
While there is nothing illegal about selling your car to an individual instead of going through a dealer, people who sell a certain number of cars per year (the number varies from state to state) must obtain a license. Those who do not and pose as individual sellers are called curbstone dealers.
There is a reason why they try to circumvent the rules that licensed dealers must follow, such as money back guarantees if the car is a lemon. And curbstone dealers are "often unstable or, at the very least, difficult to locate," Peterson said.
If something goes wrong, you - and the authorities - will have a hard time tracking down that paving stone seller.
Unless you have a knowledge of cars on a mechanical level, your untrained eye will not notice that high quality parts have been replaced with subpar pieces or airbags are missing.

Your mechanic should be able to tell you if there's anything wrong with the car, so ask the seller or a trusted auto expert—not someone the seller hired—can inspect it before you commit.

"If the seller won't let you take it to a mechanic before you buy, go somewhere else immediately," Peterson said.
Many sellers pressure buyers to make a deal, and in the case of Craigslist, it gets personal. Scammers pull on your heartstrings to encourage you to make a snap decision based on a hard luck story.

They may say they are about to be drafted into the military or claim they lost their job and can't pay the rent without selling their car.
"Scammers have some happy story to play on your sympathy," says Hutt. "They force you to pay quickly - because of their urgency - before you think twice or seek advice from someone else."
In fake ads, scammers know that the buyer's alarm bells will go off if they ask for $20,000 up front, which is why they trick it up a bit. Often they claim that the car is in high demand, so they can't guarantee a below average price unless you put down a down payment.
"The scammer asks for money in small amounts rather than all at once," says Hutt. "First is the deposit, then payment, then shipping."

The next thing you know, you've put a huge chunk of change into a car you've never seen before.
Escrow sites are designed to protect you as a customer. You pay the third-party site instead of sending it directly to the seller, and if something goes wrong, the escrow returns your money to you - not the scammer.
But fraudsters know that online shoppers are looking for such protection, so they trick you into thinking you're entering into a secure contract by spoofing an existing escrow site or setting up their own.
Don't automatically trust an escrow site that a seller recommends. BBB suggests researching the site yourself and trusting only state-licensed escrow services.

One of the oldest tricks in the books is turning the odometer backwards. The number of miles a car has been driven is a good indicator of how much wear and tear it has endured, so dropping a top trick or two (or 10,000) can make buyers think they've practically bought a new car. .
