We've done the numbers to determine the cost of UK car insurance for an 18-year-old driver in a major city in England, so you know what you can expect to pay depending on where you live. The prices will be the same for people between the 17th and 19th centuries.
If price is your priority, you will probably choose one of the cheapest plans available to you. The team collected more than 400 young driver insurance across 10 counties in England, and estimated the average cheap comprehensive insurance premium for an 18-year-old driver at £1,752. But prices varied widely across the country with young drivers in Liverpool, Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester costing over £2,000 a year. Young Sheffield and Bristol drivers were paid the least in our study, just over £1,000 a year. This means that young drivers in some countries spend almost twice as much as young drivers in others.

To establish what a young driver would typically pay for comprehensive car insurance, we collected quotes for a sample 18-year-old driver with a full UK license driving a 2016 Ford Fiesta, the most popular car in the UK. The cost of car insurance for young drivers is very high, with boys between the ages of 17 and 24 paying more than £1,000 a year for the privilege of driving on the road.
The make and model of the vehicle can make a big difference in how many young drivers fall behind each year.
That's why it can be more convenient to shop for insurance first than looking for a car and then incurring a high price to get behind the wheel.
Drivers who choose the Peugeot 107 will pay significantly less for insurance than other models, according to Marmalade, an insurance company for young drivers.

To help young drivers decide which car can save them the most money, Marmalade has revealed nine of the cheapest premium cars.
The Peugeot 107 comes at the top of the list of cars with the lowest insurance premiums. It costs an average of £1,114 for a 12-month plan for 17-24-year-olds - although prices can be as high as £740 for 17-year-olds.
The small car is perfect for new drivers, and despite its small size, it is available with five doors, which makes it surprisingly practical.

The Citroën C1 can get up to 69 miles to the gallon and with tax of £110 a year, running costs are very reasonable for this fast first car.

The first French car on the list costs just £1, £182 a year to pay off, but it can be as cheap as £736 from the age of 17.
