High Speed Internet Available In My Area

High Speed Internet Available In My Area - Last year a report from the Federal Communications Commission found that 21.3 million Americans did not have broadband access in 2019. A new report from BroadbandNow, a company that helps consumers find out if high-speed internet is available where they live, estimates that the truth is the number is actually two double times The research points to a flaw in Flintshire County Council's data collection, specifically that if an ISP offers a service to at least one household in a census block, then the entire block is counted as connected.

BroadbandNow then manually checked the availability of high-speed internet at 11,000 addresses to get a more accurate picture of how many people were disconnected. It estimates that 42.8 million people are not connected to fixed high-speed internet across the United States and at the state level, Texas has the highest number at 4.17 million. California and Arizona have the second and third highest estimated totals at 2.35 million and 1.84 million respectively.

Home internet service is getting faster. Across the United States, providers have introduced multi-gigabit plans advertising speeds of up to 2,000Mbps, 5,000Mbps or higher, with even faster speeds in the works. These fast plans can be expensive, however, and are likely to be much faster than the average household needs.

At&t Fiber Coverage Map

Most cable and fiber optic internet providers also offer plans that, while slower than super-fast multi-gigabit plans, are more practical and affordable while still providing plenty of speed. However, not all high-speed ISPs are the same. Here are my picks for the best high-speed internet providers.

Xfinity recently claimed that Ookla was on top for fastest average download speed in Q4 2022. With an average download speed of 226Mbps, Xfinity barely managed to reach Spectrum's average of 225Mbps, but it was significantly faster than AT&T ( 187Mbps) and Verizon (183Mbps).

There are many factors involved in a speed test, such as testing over Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, quality of equipment, distance from the router and time of day, not to mention the maximum speed of the internet plan. Still, Xfinity's place at the top is impressive, at least in terms of download speeds.

Cable internet like Xfinity can provide fast download speeds, but upload speeds are often a different story. According to Ookla's speed test results, Xfinity's average upload speed is 10th of its download speed, around 20Mbps, placing it fourth on the list of fastest upload speeds.

Google Fiber has arguably the best gigabit plans available from any major provider. Its 1 Gig plan offers matching speeds of up to 1,000Mbps starting at $70. This plan includes mesh Wi-Fi, 1TB of cloud storage and unlimited data with no contract or setup fees.

Google Fiber also has a 2Gbps plan with similar benefits starting at $100 per month and recently introduced a new 5Gpbs speed tier in select areas. These plans are tempting, but if you're looking for an affordable high-speed plan under a hundred dollars, you can't go wrong with Google Fiber 1 Gig.

When it comes to internet speed, what qualifies as "fast" will vary from home to home. With speeds ranging from 300Mbps to 5Gbps, AT&T Fiber offers plans to meet almost any speed need.

In most serviceable areas for AT&T Fiber, you'll have a choice of five speed tiers: 300Mbps, 500Mbps, 1Gbps, 2Gbps and 5Gbps. The monthly price is different for each plan, but all plans include your equipment rental and unlimited data at no extra cost.

AT&T Fiber plans also offer comparable, or nearly comparable, download and upload speeds, something you won't get from cable internet providers like Xfinity and Spectrum. For example, AT&T Fiber was the fastest for upload speeds in Ookla's speed test results with an average speed of 146Mbps. The nearest cable provider, Optimum, has an average upload speed of less than 30Mbps.

Verizon Fios has three speed tiers offering rated speeds of 300Mbps, 500Mbps and 1Gbps (plus a 2Gbps plan now available in NYC). Speeds and prices are comparable to many ISPs, but bonus offers help Verizon Fios stand out as a high-speed internet provider.

Your router rental is included with all Verizon Fios plans while 1 Gig Fios also includes Whole Home Wi-Fi service. You'll also get a little more in signup bonuses with the 1 Gig plan.

Verizon Fios changes its special offers frequently, but it's not uncommon for providers to give new customers gift cards, streaming or specialty shopping subscriptions, electronics, or more. Rewards are often best when signing up for gigabit service, but there's usually something extra that comes with lower-tier plans as well.

Broadband Speed Availability And Coverage

Ziply Fiber, a regional provider serving parts of Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington, extends 2 and 5 gig service to 170,000 homes, mostly located in suburban or rural areas. The new high-speed plan makes Ziply Fiber not only the fastest provider in the Northwest, but also the fastest rural provider nationwide.

Ziply's 2-show plan starts at $120 per month, while the 5-show service is $300. That sounds pretty high but, by comparison, Google Fiber's 2-show plan is $100 per month and Xfinity's multi-show plan, with a maximum speed of 6Gbps, is also $300 per month. Still, if more than $100 is more than you want to pay for home internet service, Ziply Fiber also offers three low-level plans, including one-show service that starts at $60 a month.

These providers, along with regional providers too numerous to list here, also offer high-speed internet plans including gigabit service in select areas. As well as the best high-speed internet providers listed above, these are definitely worth checking out if they're available in your area.

New Federal Infrastructure Funds Would Go Toward Helping Pa. Communities With Poor Internet Access

You may have noticed a trend in our list of the best gigabit providers. Fiber-optic providers are often your best bet for high-speed home internet, although Xfinity—traditionally a cable provider—has the fastest download speeds on average. Other cable internet providers such as Spectrum, Cox and Mediacom offer good gigabit plans, but beware of relatively low upload speeds.

When shopping for any internet service, be sure to compare the average internet speeds, prices and features of all providers in your area to ensure you get the best high-speed plan for your home.

Speeds of 100Mbps and above will handle most online activities such as HD streaming, online gaming and remote working/learning on multiple devices. That is the actual tested internet speed of 100Mbps or higher, not the advertised plan speed of 100Mbps. If your Internet plan includes a "top speed" of 100Mbps, your actual speed is likely to be much lower if you use a Wi-Fi connection and connect multiple devices. For the fastest home internet connection, consider plans that advertise gigabit speeds, up to 940Mbps or higher.

High Speed Internet Available In My Area

Frankly, gigabit speeds will be overkill for the average home, at least for now. Larger homes with multiple connected devices can probably handle 300Mbps to 500Mbps no problem. For a smaller home, 100Mbps to 200Mbps might be fine, but I wouldn't go below 100Mbps if you want a "fast" connection.

The Best Rural Internet Providers Available For Your Needs

That said, gigabit internet has its advantages. The biggest one is that the extra speed boost will offset the speed drop when using a Wi-Fi connection. Using Wi-Fi will often result in actual speeds half the speed advertised in your plan or lower. As you move further away from the router, the actual speed can drop even more. The best router and a good mesh Wi-Fi system will help make up for the speed loss, but gigabit service is your best bet for the fastest speeds over Wi-Fi.

Another advantage of gigabit service is value. Although gigabit is planning
