In addition to the five highest-rated public high schools in the state of Illinois, Chicago Public Schools are two of the top 100 high schools in the country, according to a new ranking by US & World Report.

The annual list of self-proclaimed "world authorities" on education rankings released the 2017 version of its public high school rankings Tuesday morning.

The highest-ranked Illinois school was Northside College Prep High School, a selective-enrollment school in North Park, which was ranked the No. 40 public high school in the nation. It was followed by Peyton College Prep, another selective admissions school on the Near North Side that was ranked 64th overall.
This is the second year in a row that both have been ranked as the best public high schools in Illinois. Northside was ranked No. 39 overall in the 2016 results, followed by Patton at No. 41.
Rounding out the top five state high schools were Jones College Prep, Whitney Young and Lane Tech — all selective enrollment CPS schools. The highest-ranked CPS neighborhood school was Lincoln Park High School, which finished as the eighth-ranked school in the state.
These six CPS schools -- along with Brooks College Prep and Phoenix Military Academy -- received "gold" medals from the US, which indicate "high levels of college readiness."
University High School Ranked Among Best In State, Nation
According to the report, these rankings focus on graduation rates and state proficiency tests, specifically how students at these schools perform compared to their peers in their states. But the group says it has changed its approach this year, giving more weight to schools where students participated and scored well in AP courses and exams.
Arizona and Texas high schools account for eight of the top 10 spots in the national rankings. BASIS School Inc., a Scottsdale, Arizona charter network, had all three of the top overall schools and five of the top seven.
The University of Chicago tied for third place in the 2017 US & World Report collegiate rankings, up one spot each of the past two years.

Less measurable attributes, such as culture and diversity, teachers, clubs, health and safety, resources, facilities and sports, are based on parent and student surveys. Overall, ETHS scored 95.37 out of 100 on the national scorecard.
The U.S. News Best High Schools report ranks nearly 18,000 public high schools out of nearly 24,000 reviews in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. According to the US News website, top-ranked public high schools across the country include a mix of traditional, charter and magnet schools. Top-ranked schools are those whose students have exceeded and exceeded expectations on state tests, taken and passed various college-level tests, and graduated at high rates.

Six indicators were used on a weighted scale to create this year's rankings: college readiness (30% of the rankings); Mathematics and reading skills (20%); Math and reading performance (20%); underserved student performance (10%); College curriculum expansion (10%); and graduation rate (10%).
Collecting data from third-party sources, this is the third year that secondary school rankings have been calculated using its current methodology. HIGHLAND PARK, IL - Highland Park High School was ranked the 28th best high school in Illinois and No. 688 in the nation by US News & World Report.
The roughly 1,800-student high school has a 62 percent Advanced Placement participation rate, with 56 percent of students passing at least one AP exam, according to U.S. News.
Math proficiency is 62 percent, reading proficiency is 63 percent and the HPHS graduation rate is 95 percent, which U.S. News ranks as "slightly above the state average."
According to US News, the purpose of the rankings is to compare how public schools prepare students for college-level work and teach students basic skills.

Highland Park High School's ranking of No. 28 in the state this year is an improvement over its 2021 ranking of No. 38 in Illinois. It is also identical to HPHS's state ranking from 2020, when it was 619th in the nation. Back in 2019, HPHS was ranked 26th in Illinois.
This year's rankings used data from the 2019-20 school year, adjusted to compensate for the effects of COVID-19, according to US News.
Most schools closed ahead of state tests in the spring of 2020, and federal education officials waived testing waivers that year, so U.S. News used assessment data from the past three years.
In Illinois, the top five schools in the rankings were selective-enrollment high schools in Chicago Public Schools, with the No. 6 school being a selective-enrollment suburban school — Provo Math and Science Academy.

Among suburban public high schools that accept all residents, Adlai A. Stevenson High School in Lincoln County was the leader, followed by Vernon Hills High School, Handel Central High School, New Trier Township High School and Lake Forest High School.

Chicago Public Schools once again claim the top spot on the annual list of the state's best public high schools.
U.S. & World Report, the self-proclaimed "world authority" on education rankings, released its list of the best public high schools statewide and nationally on Wednesday. At the top of the Illinois rankings: Walter Patton College Prep, a selective-enrollment high school in Old Town that moved a year ago.

It was followed by Northside College Prep, Lane Tech, Phoenix Military Academy, Jones College Prep and Whitney Young High School, respectively.
Walter Payton and Northside College Prep also made their way into the top 100 U.S. national high schools, at Nos. 52 and 82, respectively. They have both been ranked in the top two in the state for the past three years.
