The perfect combination of an entry-level bike and a top-of-the-line bike, this nimble hybrid is always recommended to first-time commuters. In addition to good components – a lot of Shimano tech – it offers some unique upgrades like Schwalbe tires and mechanical disc brakes. It's a comfortable and stable ride, quick enough to run to work and light weight (11.9 kg) and gym thanks to the 700c tires.
We traded the saddle for an extra long ride, but the standard saddle is perfectly comfortable; Micro-suspension makes a big difference compared to holes. In addition to being great for light travel, our tester used it to tow a pram and twins on a short ride to nursery and it handled it well.

A bike that turns you into battery power. At the lower end of the e-bike price range, this stripped-down motor from the Cube completely changed our view of power-assisted riding. Firstly, it's really comfortable, looks great and has most of the extras - rack and fenders - as standard.
All components are of high quality, with nine gears (plus assist) ideal for riding in the mountains. The battery sold us: A day's drive along the hilly coast helped it drop to 60 percent, but a full day in "Eco" mode only made an impact. Like most e-bikes, it's quite heavy (24.9kg) – not the type of bike you want to carry up and down stairs often.
If you're up for a bit of racing or you're always a bit slow but prefer an upright riding position and a bit of protection from the road surface, this sleek hybrid is your best bet. The components are BTWIN, Decathlon's own bike brand, which is not compatible with Shimano for life, but works well for occasional cyclists. We liked the tires best: the 28-inch wheels are a little smaller than most 700c city bikes and a little bigger than mountain bike tires, but for us, they strike the right balance of stability, off-road traction and speed.

Classic geometry makes this bike a comfortable successor to the legendary and tragically discontinued Dawes Tourer, the beloved Galaxy, but with a little more sit-and-go capability. The components are excellent - lots of Shimano and a reliable Dawes own brand frame, fork and saddle. It's a bit heavy - 13.4kg - but can go at decent speeds thanks to the transmission (it's a six-speed, so it has 18 gears). V-brakes may frustrate some, but our reviewers find them easy to maintain and replace.
A great bike for commuters with a wild side. Light and nimble, it's a simple bike out of the box with great technology (internal cable mounts, excellent hydraulic disc brakes and lots of durable specialized components). But it's also incredibly easy to modify for touring or off-road riding, thanks to race and mudguard mounts and multiple brazed bottle and pump mounts. Our mountain biker also found the tires to be good: thick and grippy, perfect for rough roads and the odd gravel adventure.
Totally reliable, our reviewer's Trek FX has more than 5,000 miles on its tires, including bumpy city streets, gravel canal routes, and long-distance European bike tours. And all this time he had a puncture. It's light and fast, has good Shimano components and 21 gears, and is Bluetooth compatible for recording your rides on your smartphone. Rack and fender attachment points mean it's ready for adventure, but the real selling point is the dreamy combination of speed and durability.
Unbeatable price for a beautiful bike. The entry-level Raleigh e-bike is packed with advanced technology like a 400WH battery that can go up to 60 miles before recharging, four levels of assistance and an OLED control panel.
