A July 19, 1984 Los Angeles Times article on area codes noted that there are two - count 'em, two - Los Angeles area codes.
What Is Area Code For California
Long ago, when the world was young and there were only landlines, one area code ruled everything from the Mexican border to Bakersfield: 213.

Then he started dividing and multiplying. It was born in 714, and in 805, it later became the first borough with three area codes within LA city limits.
Now, nearly 75 years after the birth of 213, Los Angeles County has 10 area codes, eight originally rooted in geography and two floating around the widely used 310 and 818.
Does your area code mean something to you? We make do with what we have, a bottomless megalopolis that pits the city against the unrecognizable, where it removes the historical landmarks that other cities depend on to guide identity.
In 1991, a year before a new 310 area code removed more than two million phones from 213's chest, James Katz, a sociologist studying the social effect of telephone technology, said that Californians were more than people in their area code identities. Elsewhere, these three digits were like compass points on our mental map, so "when you take the number, you destroy the identity in a certain sense."

Los Angeles is a complicated place. In this weekly report, Pat Morrison explains how it works, its history and its culture.
Since the "bang bang" scattered many of the original 213 area codes, what happened to those signals? In 1994, a Times columnist explained what a numerologist said: 213, LA's original tough heart, was a working-class area code "without pretension." How can a numerologist avoid the fact that 213 is an area code for Los Angeles citizens who are almost all about political ambitions? 310's phones embrace a "higher, more ritualistic, barren environment," while 818's phones — from canyon to canyon, San Fernando to San Gabriel — embody "old-fashioned values."
Fortunately, the numerologist discovered that Manhattan's coveted 212 was "some frivolity...the Ross Perot of area codes." Exhibit A: The "Seinfeld" episode where Elaine is desperate to retrieve her lost 212 phone.
L.A. it is a place like no other. You have questions. Pat Morrison can and will definitely find the answers.

The phone may be a geographical marker, but it is not destiny. Can't afford a home in Laguna Beach? By buying a phone number for sale on websites like phonenumberguy.com, you can still buy its 949 area code status, yacht broker gold numbers, and unreal housewives.
The site's owner, Ed Manns, told the Washington Post a few years ago that 310 is the most desirable of all area codes. "They're so rare. People can't even get a 310 anymore, not even a random 310. Overlaps — recently, we're snobs, obviously. "No one wants," Manns said, "a 424, especially in the business." You are".
This begs the question: If every area code is being used up so quickly that phone companies are asking for new ones, why aren't the phone numbers in the desired area codes being claimed?
In 1999, the California Public Service Commission asked central banks to act as honest brokers for phone companies, not focusing on any one location, as the largest telecom SBC lobbied the feds to overlay higgledy-piggledy area codes across the country. Californians, the CPUC said, already believed that "the shortage number is completely artificial, and therefore the need to create new area codes is false."

With La Cienega near Inglewood. at Beverly Hills High School. In people's backyards in Echo Park. On top of Signal Hill. There are oil wells in and around LA. You won't see that in Paris (France).
Who first used these area codes? Why did Vermont get 802 and Southern California 213?
The answer is the word "dial". We ignored the keyboard dial, but in 1947, the year the area code was launched, "cht-cht-cht" was the sound of the rotary dial turning into place.
So, the shorter the numbers in the phone number, the less time it takes for the dialer to turn again so that the next one can be dialed. Large cities (Manhattan, Los Angeles, Chicago) received low-number area codes for speed dialing 212, 213, 312. Larger numbers were allocated to less populous states. In Vermont and Hawaii, locals prefer the states' unique area codes, 802 and 808, to printed hoodies and hats, as do some college graduates.

Area codes 760 and 442 are North American Numbering Plan (NANP) telephone codes for the US state of California. These area codes serve the Overlay Numbering Plan Area (NPA), which covers most of southeastern and southern California. It covers Imperial, Inyo and Mono counties, as well as parts of San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Kern counties. The 760 area code was created on March 22, 1997 as a split from the 619 area code.
Code 760 was split from 619 in 1997, code 714 was split in 1982. However, within a decade of its creation, the proliferation of cell phones and pagers pushed 760 and created a new area code. Required field The initial plan was to further split the area codes, moving the San Diego and Imperial areas into the new 442 area code. However, for the second time in a decade, he faced opposition from companies unwilling to change the numbers. Ultimately, the California Public Utilities Commission decided to replace 760 442, and since 2009 all users in the region have been required to enter the area code to dial local calls.

In 2021, all local calls in the 530 area code must dial ten digits (area code + phone number). The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires this change for 82 prefixes whose local exchanges (central offices) set "988" to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Ten Digit Dialing Coming To The 530 Area Code
82 area codes allow 7-digit dialing and use 988 as the central office code, even if you don't have a phone number. Area code 530 is one of them. Other affected area codes in California are 209, 562, 626, 650, 707, 925, 949, 951. A full list of the 82 area codes affected nationwide can be found here.
The local exchange, also known as the central office code, is the first three digits of a seven-digit telephone number. In preparation for implementing a faster way to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - using only "988" to connect callers to Lifeline - these area codes must be converted to ten-digit dialing for all calls, including local calls.
Nothing except dialing the area code on your phone. However, if you are using a PBX or VoIP phone system, you will need to upgrade or reprogram it for ten-digit dialing. With ten-digit dialing available in April 2021 in areas where seven-digit dialing will be phased out in October 2021, reprogramming of PBX or VoIP systems can begin at any time. The same goes for alarm settings and autodialers and contacts saved on your phone or phone systems.
Update: In the 708 area code in California and Illinois, you may need to dial a "1" before the area code and a seven-digit phone number for local calls.
