The Meadows Mall Las Vegas

The Meadows Mall Las Vegas - When my daughters were young, we made many trips to the Meadows Mall. It's a great place for school uniforms, pictures of Santa and the Easter Bunny, and small bags of select candies from the Candy Factory. We dressed up for family photos at JCPenney.

To me, Waldenbooks and B. Dalton, the competing bookstores, one upstairs and one downstairs, are missing the world. That was before Las Vegas had some big Borders, Barnes & Noble, and smaller specialty bookstores like Writer's Block. The selection at those stores is limited, but you can usually walk away with something worth reading.

Common sense says the home market is dying, and the pandemic has dealt the final blow to this retail hero. But prognosticators love to paint pictures of impending doom. You want to see piles of concrete beams and rusting steel and the wandering Foot Locker and Forever 21 signs sticking out of the wreckage.

The truth is, it can be more difficult. In fact, many stores do not die, despite the great changes in the shopping world. Instead, they evolve and adapt to different situations. The retailers may have lost ground amid competition from Amazon, Walmart and Target, but reports of their demise are widely praised.

Locally, this development can be seen at the Boulevard Mall on Maryland Parkway, with its SeaQuest aquarium and international food court. But some recent visits to the Meadows Mall say it's responding to the new market.

The Meadows is a local shopping area. It's big, clean, safe and easy to get to, with US 95 exits at both ends. It was considered the town square, believe it or not, a distinction it cannot boast of today.

The days of dominance of the Meadows area are long gone. The Galleria at Sunset occupied the southeast corner, while Summerlin City occupied the west corner. Meadows endured these attacks in part by embracing the diversity of Las Vegas.

This diversity was evident during my recent shopping sprees. White, black, Latino, and Asian residents are overrepresented among customers and employees, reflecting the demographics of nearby neighborhoods.

What we found at Meadows was a transition from a regional shopping center to nearby retail, entertainment and services. Although Macy's, JCPenney and Spencer's Gifts still exist, they have been joined by non-traditional retail businesses: insurance companies, dentists, tattoo parlors. It makes sense to include services in this marketing environment. Who doesn't want to associate a dental appointment with something fun?

Of course, the Meadows food court has its own space, but it's still a different kind. The district, I believe, decides the direction of the food court, rather than corporate executives following a certain procedure.

If Meadows fully embraces its neighborhood agenda, it could become a community resource in new and exciting ways. Meadows has plenty of space, both inside and outside its parking lots. Aside from the non-traditional businesses that have moved in, there are other ways the Meadows could grow.

It can rent office space, which brings customers to shops and restaurants. Can host college classes. On-demand rental properties are another option - not in the market, but around. Markets are a great place for family entertainers. Santa and the Easter Bunny are great for two weeks in the spring and winter, but why not fill the entire year with reasons to take the kids shopping?

Writer Bill Bryson once said, “We built nations. Now we are building malls. Reinventing malls as social gathering places will help build our nation.” ravaged by presidential politics and plagued by disease. The store was developed by Dayton-Hudson Corporation, built by Ernest W. Hahn Inc. It opened on August 5, 1978, as a secondary mall in the city center connecting to Boulevard Mall. Meadows Mall has changed ownership several times, was purchased by Geral Growth Properties in 1998, and a major renovation was launched in 2003.

The Dayton-Hudson Corporation (now Target Corporation) began planning the Meadows Mall in 1973. That same year, in 1974, the Las Vegas City Commission voted against the mall, while some members felt the project should be moved to a better place. In early 1974, Dayton-Hudson won a district court ruling requiring the city to grant a zoning variance. The city committee appealed to the Nevada Supreme Court, which ruled in 1975 that the city must accept the variance.

The mall was designed by Charles Kober & Associates, who chose the colors and desert colors for the building.

In June 2003, GGP began a multi-million dollar renovation that included interior lighting, tile flooring, a new color scheme, new stone, exterior painting and landscaping.

The company felt that the store, with its 24-year-old display, needed a modern look to compete. It was kept in good condition during the trip and most of the work was done in the early hours of the night.

With 99 percent of the demolition complete, the store will celebrate its milestone on November 21, 2003, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that morning, followed by live jazz performances and a live children's show featuring Strawberry Shortcake. Several new stores were added during the changes, including new restrooms and a renovated food space. The mall is 947,370 sq ft (88,014 m).

Along with Valley Hospital Medical Center and Summerlin Hospital, Meadows Mall added 1,640 sq ft (152 m).
