Car rental was usually the last thing to book after locking down the flight and hotel, but check availability before planning your trip. I booked a trip to Kauai last month (June) with National and Hertz in April. Fortunately, there were still a few vehicles available for booking. I booked a full-size SUV with National ($310 per week + tax) and a minivan with Hertz ($285 per week + tax). Given the long waits (1.5 hours) for flights arriving during the day, I took both vehicles in my group as my flight from SJC to LIH was the first flight of the day arriving from the mainland to Kauaï.
National Car Rental reservations were handled by Alamo due to COVID, so I jumped on the shuttle to get an SUV. When we arrived, the parking lot was full of cars and SUVs. I had no problem getting the Chevy Tahoe when the pickup time for my reservation was close to the actual time. Hertz is located next to Alamo in Lihue, so I headed to their lot while waiting for Alamo to assign me an SUV. Lots of vans, cars and SUVs @ Hertz too. Hertz was very well organized where all I had to do was show my Hawaii Safe Travels QR code and driver's license to get my pre-printed documents. It only took 5 minutes in line and then I went through the # of paperwork that resulted in a Dodge Grand Caravan GT. After parking the van in the airport parking lot, I went back to the Alamo shuttle to pick up the Chevy Tahoe.
