Cities With Highest Std Rates - The AN STD map shows Baltimore as the worst U.S. city for STDs, as they are more common in the South and California.
Testing experts from Innerbody analyzed CDC data to identify the top 100 cities with the highest rates of STDs — and Baltimore came in first.
Cities With Highest Std Rates
An analysis of the most recent city-by-city statistics found Baltimore to have the highest per capita rate, with 2,004 cases per 100,000 people.
Alaska Has Some Of The Highest Std Rates, But The Lowest Hiv Rates. Why?
In Maryland, there were 207 HIV infections, 7,636 cases of chlamydia, 4,231 cases of gonorrhea, and 210 cases of syphilis.
Los Angeles (92,401 cases), Chicago (58,322 cases), Houston (36,710 cases), Phoenix (34,973 cases) and Philadelphia (28,866 cases) lead in total STI cases. five.
California topped the rankings with several cities listed as STD hotspots statewide.
The Innerbody research team found that nearly half of the 25 cities with the highest rates of STDs were in the South.

Jackson, Mississippi; Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama; Augusta, Macon and Columbus in Georgia; Memphis, Tennessee is also on the list.

They also noted that three of the top 10 cities are very small - Augusta, Georgia, Killeen, Texas, and Shreveport, Los Angeles.
The researchers gathered data from CDC's October 2019 release of HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia case statistics.
These States Have The Highest Std Rates [2023]
In some cities, HIV cases go unreported and the CDC does not collect common STIs such as herpes.
The District of Columbia was considered a city, and each New York City borough was like its own metropolitan area, given its size.
Earlier this month, Innerbody found that Alaska has the highest rate of STDs while Nebraska has the lowest.
They found that Southern states dominate the rankings, with 7 of the top 10 states in the South.
Louisiana Ranks Among States With Highest Std Rates In Cdc Report — But Not As High As Last Year
Three small cities in the top 10 list had major military bases, namely Augusta, Georgia, Killeen, Texas, and Shreveport, which LACKCredit: Getty - JYYYB ranked highest (and lowest) in America's ContributoStates. and over 2.5 million new cases
Thanks to drugs and treatments prolonging the lives of HIV patients, there is less in the news about STIs than there were decades ago, when a positive HIV test was a death sentence. With less media coverage, one might conclude that STIs are not as common as they used to be.
You would be wrong. According to the latest data from the CDC, STDs have reached an all-time high in America, with more than 2.5 million new cases being reported each year. Although STDs have disappeared from the media and popular consciousness, they continue to grow relentlessly in America.
Staff analyzed the latest STI data from the CDC to calculate which states had the highest and lowest overall STI rates. We also conducted this country-level analysis for the four major STDs: chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis.
This City In Ny Is Among Top 10 Places With Highest Std Rates
Overall, Alaska has the highest rate of STDs in the country, while West Virginia has the lowest. This is primarily due to the very high rate of chlamydia in Alaska (the most common STD of the four we observed) and the low rate of the disease in West Virginia. Gonorrhea is most common in Mississippi, which is 8 times more common than in Vermont, which has the lowest rate. By a marked margin, syphilis is most common in Nevada, nearly 30 times more common than in Wyoming, where the rate of syphilis is lowest. Wyoming also has the lowest rate of HIV infection, while Georgia has the highest rate in the country.
Before we jump into the results, it's worth spending some time on the data used for this analysis. We looked at two different sets of data from the CDC in 2018, the latest data available. First, for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, we looked at the number of new case reports received by the CDC this year. For HIV, we looked at the new diagnosis rate in 2017. For all results, we look at the rate of incidence per 100,000 state residents, which is the "per capita" of STDs in each location.
To provide context, how common are all the STIs we've discussed? The table shows the rate of new cases per 100,000 people in the United States:
Of these major STDs tracked by the CDC, chlamydia is the most common. About 540 out of 100,000 people become infected with chlamydia each year. That's twice as many cases of gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis. With the exception of HIV, these diseases are treatable, but early detection is essential to reduce their damage.
Std Rates Reach All Time High In Us. Which States Have The Most Cases?
So which places in America have the highest and lowest rates of STDs? The chart below shows new cases per capita for these four diseases by state:
STD rates vary greatly depending on where you are in America. Alaska, Mississippi, and Louisiana have the highest rates of STDs in the country, with over 1,000 new cases per 100,000 people presenting each year. In other words, it is more than 1% of the population.
West Virginia and New Hampshire, on the other hand, have the lowest rates of STDs in the country. These places have almost three times lower rates of STDs than the states with the highest rates.
What makes places like Alaska have the highest rates of STDs and West Virginia the lowest? Given that chlamydia is much more common than other diseases, its prevalence by state gives overall averages. Below are chlamydia rates by state:
Sti Map Of America Reveals Most Sexually Diseased State
Alaska has the highest rate in the country with 833 new cases of chlamydia per capita each year. The problem in the state is so severe that the state health department recently issued a bulletin warning residents of the increased risk. West Virginia has the lowest rate of chlamydia in the country, contributing to its ranking as the state with the lowest overall rate of STDs in the country.
Mississippi, Alaska, and South Carolina have the highest rates of new gonorrhea, chlamydia, and general STD infections. The rate of gonorrhea is almost 8 times higher in Mississippi than in Vermont, which has the lowest rate. Across the country, depending on where you live, the chances of getting gonorrhea are very high.
Although HIV is less common than chlamydia or gonorrhea, it cannot be cured. Although advances in medicine mean that HIV-infected people can live into their seventies, the life expectancy of HIV-infected people is much shorter than that of healthy people.
Where in America are new HIV infections most common? The table below shows per capita figures by state:
Std Rates By State: Where Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, And Syphilis Are Highest And Lowest
Georgia has the highest rate of new HIV infections in the country, with 30 people reporting the disease per capita. Louisiana (a state that also ranks in the top three for chlamydia and gonorrhea) has the second highest rate of HIV infection. Countries with lower rates of HIV infection are mostly rural states.
And finally, let's look at the level of syphilis. Compared to the other three diseases we've looked at so far, syphilis is the least common. However, if it is not detected and treated in time, it can have very serious consequences.
By a large margin, Nevada has the highest rate of syphilis in the United States. This is largely driven by Clark County (the home of Las Vegas), which has the highest rate of sphllizy of any county in the United States. Vermont has the lowest rate of syphilis in the country, as does gonorrhea.
In the United States, the incidence of STDs varies greatly by location. For some diseases, STIs can be 10 times more common in one case than in another. Overall, places like Alaska, Mississippi, and Louisiana have the highest rates of STDs, while West Virginia, Vermont, and New Hampshire have the lowest.
