Did you know that there is an Air Force base less than 15 miles north of the famous Las Vegas Strip? Nellis Air Force Base is the headquarters of the United States. Air Force Combat Center. Basically a training base, there aren't many cargo planes, so you'll have to be lucky to get to or from it by jumping.

The bases with the most flights to Nellis are Travis AFB and JB McGuire. The rare missions that produce Space-A seats are usually to those bases.
Historically, other bases that have made several flights a year to Nellis are NAS Whidbey Island (Washington), JB Elmendorf (Alaska), and JB Charleston (South Carolina).

There are several buildings on Air Force Inns base. All reservations and check-ins are made through the Nellis Inn, less than a kilometer from the passenger terminal. The rest of the buildings are scattered around the base. The furthest is about a mile from Nellis Inn.
The Nellis Inn has standard rooms and luxury Transient Lodging Units (TLFs). TLFs are not available for Space-A bookings during certain times of the year.
Nellis does not have a base vehicle, and taxis/Ubers are not allowed on base unless the driver has a military ID. The main body of the base is relatively compact, so (depending on the outside temperature) it's a reasonable fit for most objects you'll use.
If you want to go to the base, you must meet the driver at the main gate, which is about 1/2 mile from Nellis Inn.

The airport is located in downtown Las Vegas, about 30 minutes from the base and has flights to anywhere you want to go!
We flew from Naval Station Rota, Spain, to Nellis in June 2022 on a rare mission. Although Las Vegas was nowhere near our final destination, it was a nice place to land. After spending a few days on base, we easily found cheap last minute flights for the last leg of our trip.

The Information, Tickets and Travel Office has tickets for concerts, shows and sporting events. The outdoor recreation office organizes fun activities such as kayaking, off-road travel and deep sea fishing.

Nellis Air Force Base (colloquially "Nellis") is a United States Air Force installation in southern Nevada. Nellis conducts air combat exercises such as Exercise Red Flag and close air support exercises such as "Gre Flag-West over Military Operations Area (MOA) airspace."
Connected to the nearby Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR). The base is also home to the Joint Air and Space Operations Center-Nellis.

1929 airfield north of Las Vegas (dirt runway, water well, and small operations shed) - operated by Western Air Express (CAM) #4, LA-to-SLC route for Contract Airmail in 1925 - used by Army Air Corps for training flight in the 1930s. After the invasion of Poland in 1939, in April 1940 the "western site" located southern Nevada for a military range "near Tonopah, Nev."
And in October 1940, Air Corps Major David Schlatter surveyed the southwestern United States for the Air Force Base.
"The 60x90 mile area at Tonopah was transferred to the War Department on October 29, 1940."
Not to be confused with "Alamo Airport" south of Las Vegas in 1942 and named after Sator McCarran in 1948.

There were "difficulties securing use" of the airport north of Las Vegas for a World War II Army airfield in Nevada.
McCarran Field was purchased by the City of Las Vegas on January 2, 1941, leased to the Army on January 5, and "assigned" to the Quartermaster Corps on January 25 - Construction on the Army began in March 1941.
The city's federal building became the location of the 79th Airlift Group in May 1941 (5 staff officers under Lt. Col. Martinus Stset), followed a month later by 5 administrative NCOs and other support personnel.

The 82d Flying Training Wing (Flexible Gunnery) was activated on 23 August 1943 as a wing of the Air Force Flying Training Command.

And the base became the demobilization ct for troop separation physics and final payment. The planned navigator, bombardier and radar operator training course for the LVAAF began instead in June 1946 at Mather Army Airfield.
On 28 August 1946 ("officially deactivated in January 1947"), the AAF Training Command closed LVAAF.
During planning for a separate air force, Las Vegas AAF was redesignated "30 Aug 47 as Mather Sub-Installation,"
The 3525th Rifle Squadron was activated on 11 February 1949, the base held its first USAF gunnery meeting on 2 May, and ATC (air traffic control) opened its LVAFB Aircraft Gunnery School on 15 May 1949.

Nellis Air Force Base was named on April 30, 1950, and Lt. Nellis' family attended the dedication ceremony on May 20, 1950.
By July 1, the Air Force ordered ATS to accelerate Korean War training for the new 95-wing air force. The first school opened at Nellis, and ATC renamed the 3595th Pilot Training Wing (Advanced Single-gine) the 3595th Training Wing (Fight Crew).
On 17 July 1950, Nellis began a replacement pilot training program to provide 115 FEAF F-51 Mustang pilots and 92 combat-ready F-80 Shooting Star pilots. Nellis' advanced single-engine pilot training was transferred to Alabama on September 1, 1950.
