LAS VEGAS () - The City of Las Vegas, in partnership with Workforce Connections, will officially open the new Employ NV Career Hub at the historic West Side School.

Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Ward 5 Councilor Cedric Crear and Ward 3 Councilor Olivia Diaz will join Workforce Connections Executive Director Jaime Cruz to cut the ribbon to open the new center at 9 a.m. on September 30.

The hub is located at 330 W. Washington Ave., and is expected to help unemployed or underemployed residents secure new careers by providing easy access to free resources available through the public workforce development system.

"Bringing these critical resources to our communities is key to helping those in need find employment," Goodman said. "We want to make sure these resources are convenient and accessible."

City officials say the hub will be staffed by two full-time employment professionals and help connect job seekers with employment opportunities, as well as resume and interview assistance, career research and potentially paid training to qualify for a new career.

"Making sure we're training our workforce and making sure the skill is there, those are key elements of the HUNDRED plan action plan for Section 5," Crear said. "The Employ NV Career Hub is another step in getting people back to work and creating pathways to meaningful and fulfilling careers. Section 5 works through similar programs.

City officials say unemployment in the neighborhoods surrounding the historic Westside school is higher than the valley average. A February 2021 analysis showed 13 percent unemployment for the 89106 zip code, compared to 10.4 percent for the Las Vegas metropolitan area.

According to the Nevada Unemployment Office, unemployment in Las Vegas is down slightly to 9.4 percent by July 2021.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the need for easier access to employment and fulfilling opportunities," Cruz said. "We are grateful to the City of Las Vegas for partnering with us to make these critical resources available in the historic West Side neighborhood."

Employer NV Career Hubs are part of a network of one-stop centers throughout Southern Nevada. The first Employ NV Career Hub opened at the College of Southern Nevada's Charleston Campus Student Union in November 2020.
