A Hydrangea For Every Garden

When you've been gardening for over 60 years, like me, you see a lot of trends and fads come and go. A recent trip down memory lane reminded me quite a bit on the subject of growing vegetables. Two that I remember well are strict French gardening (or organic gardening), and square foot gardening. This is a little basic ..., called bigleaf or French hydrangea, usually has pink or blue flowers, although some varieties have white flowers. Flower color is indirectly determined by soil pH, which affects the presence of aluminum in the soil. In acidic soil, the flowers will be blue, but in alkaline soil, the flowers will be pink. Aluminum is available to plants in acidic soil. Research has determined that the true mechanism of the color change is due to the presence or absence of aluminum compounds in the flower.

For blue flowers, keep the soil pH between 5 and 5.5. Use aluminum sulfate or sulfur to lower the pH to this level when you see new growth emerging in April. For application rates see the table in document 1650, Changing the pH of your soil. Information on soil testing is available in Fact Sheet 1652, Soil Testing.

For pink flowers, maintain a soil pH of 6 or more by adding mulch to your soil. For more information on lime material selection and application timing, see Fact Sheet 1650, Changing Soil pH.

Hydrangeas grow easily in well-drained soil, which should contain plenty of organic matter or humus. Bigleaf hydrangea likes morning sun and afternoon shade. Avoid planting it in hot, dry, hot weather. Most people buy hydrangeas when they are in bloom, but the best time to spot them is in the spring or fall. To plant, dig a large hole about two feet across and one foot deep.

How To Grow And Care For Hydrangeas

Bigleaf hydrangea responds to heavy fertilizer applications during the growing season. It is recommended to use a common fertilizer such as 10-10-10 at a rate of 2 cups per 100 square meters in March, May, and July. It is not necessary to remove the dust when applying fertilizer, but water immediately after application to help dissolve the fertilizer and send it into the soil.

Hydrangeas have large leaves that can suffer from hot weather. They need a lot of water, so plan to water thoroughly once a week or more often.

Large hydrangea plants should be pruned after flowering so they can develop "old wood" to form flower buds and support next summer's blooms. Avoid pruning after August 1st.

One of the easiest ways to propagate large hydrangea is by layering. This is done by digging a hole near the tree and bending part of the leg down into the groove. Use a knife to cut a small ring of the outer shell about an inch wide. Next, remove the topsoil, leaving about 6 to 12 inches of topsoil. Established hydrangeas can be divided in early spring using a spade to divide the branches.

How To Grow Smooth Hydrangeas (h. Arborescens)

The most common reason hydrangeas are not blooming is winter injury. Other causes could be too much shade, poor fertility, and too much nitrogen.

Hydrangeas are susceptible to Cercospora leaf spot, anthracnose, and powdery mildew. For cultural control of these three fungal leaf diseases, remove and dispose of fallen leaves. Use a hose or drip irrigation hose to water hydrangeas. If you are using a sprinkler, always water in the morning to encourage leaf drying.

Cercospora leaf spot can be controlled by spraying every two weeks with chlorothalonil, methyl thiophanate, mancozeb, or myclobutanil. Anthracnose can be controlled by spraying every two weeks with chlorothalonil or methyl thiophanate. Downy mildew can be controlled by spraying 1% horticultural oil weekly, or by spraying every two weeks with methyl thiophanate or myclobutanil. See Table 1 for examples of brands and products.

Do not apply horticultural oil sprays when temperatures are above 90 degrees F or on drought tolerant plants. Spray at the end of the day to slow drying time for better control.
