"When I was 15, it was difficult at home," she said. "Nobody in my house had finished high school. My living conditions were poor, so I got a full-time job.

On the second day of 10th grade, Welch retired, eventually leaving the area and never returning to high school. He married, started a family and moved to Augusta Instrument Repairs and Services, which he owned for nearly 20 years.
"I have a good life, but I want to do more and continue my education," he said. "I feel equipped to complete a degree course in theology and eventually pursue a degree."
"God told me to get my GED," he said. "The preparation for the tests was difficult at times, but I knew it was important and I wanted to work until it was possible."
Welch said he has the support of everyone in his family, including his wife, two adult children and three teenagers. He also kept his 16 years in science.

The Downtown Women's Center offers GED preparation, which can now be taken on a computer, not just in pen and paper format, in California.
At the age of 59, Rita Kowalski decided that she wanted to use the computer more than emailing her kids and watching salmon videos.
Forty-two years after dropping out of high school to start a family, Kowalski, now a grandmother of 12, is using it to earn a high school diploma.

"I realized that I can look right into the computer," Kowalski said. "My attention span is shorter with books for some reason, but I can look at a booth for hours and it doesn't bother me."
After decades of pencil-to-paper tests, California this year became the latest state to introduce a computer-based General Education test, called the GED. The GED Testing Service, a private organization that administers the test, released a computer-based form in 2012 to help more adults obtain the GED credential and prepare for the new test to be launched in 2014.
The latest version of the 71-year-old test will be available for more than the school equivalent, and the new form of the test will also support that initiative. It will measure "life and college readiness skills" with fewer multiple-choice questions and more content-based answers.
"It allows people to be more prepared [for the test and work] because everything is counted," said Alfred Ramirez, chief GED examiner at Glendale Community College. Ramirez said he is in the process of applying to Pearson VUE, the testing provider, for the new online certification.

Although the new exam format still requires students to attend designated centers, there is a greater trend toward computer-based education and online education. The number of online courses is growing, and courses are being taken for credit at the university level. Last week, the administrators of the college entrance exam announced that at the beginning of the 2015 test-based.
Computer-based exams "will provide a better experience for students and meet them in the world where they already live," said Ed Colby, a spokesman for ACT Inc. "They've already used the hit papers."
More than 20% of California adults - 5.5 million people - lack a high school diploma or GED, and testing officials hope to appeal to them with online registration and a more flexible testing schedule with a computerized form. On the computer, students can take one or all five sections of the test at one time, as opposed to two days of untimed test schedules if the test is taken on paper.
For example, students can read part of a test and come back at their convenience to take the math part, Ramirez said. The process may appeal more to someone who has a job or a family, so to speak.

An analysis of test performance found that adults who take a computer-based test are 59% more likely to receive a failed test than to give up and drop out of the program.
The analysis also found that the passing rates were higher for those who took the test on a computer (88%) than on paper (72%), which some say is the result of the technical experience of their test.
"Experience anxiety doesn't seem to be high," says Evelyn Lenton, head GED examiner at Antelope Valley Adult School. "Some people think they'll be so lucky because they can't write fast, but then I'll see students shaking their hands [through writing projects] like they haven't written much in their lives."
Kowalski didn't let her "hunt-and-grab" writing style deter her from taking the computer to the test and practiced it every day, even while texting.

"When you're texting, you're lazy with spelling and punctuation, and I want to do well as a practice test," Kowalski said, adding that words like "you" and "are" are used as equivalents.
After he started and took the test at Antelope Valley Adult School, he stopped all other distractions, except for signing classmates. The testing room has partitions between the desk and the monitor in the hall to discourage misappropriation.
"You can hear the typing, but it was not bothersome because it is soft and the sound in the background decreases," he said. When he finished the test section of the reading, he left his station, unlike the paper tests, which have to wait until the time.
“It's a self-fulfillment that I've never noticed before; I am happy and successful in raising my children, says Kowalski. "Now I can focus on myself."

The overall experience with the online test was great, Kowalski said. His nervousness quickly dissipated as he sat down at his computer for the exam, and because of the instant result score, he was able to call his grandchildren with the good news.
"He broke 640" out of 800, he said. Students need a 410 to pass the section and a 450 average to pass the entire exam. "I'm so proud that I called my family and told them," Kowalski said. - It feels good, it really does.
He plans to take another four sections in the next few weeks because the testing service offers free retests if any part of the computer rig fails in May. After this plans to provide a nurturing program.
