Dental Programs For International Students - The UNC Adams School offers a 29-month Advanced Standing Program for International Dentists (ASPID) as an entry for foreign dental school graduates, other than Canadian graduates, seeking additional training and practice in the United States.
ASPID students enroll in an intensive six-month part of didactic, preclinical and laboratory courses. This prepares them to integrate into the third-year pre-doctoral DDS class during the fall semester of the same year.

Submit an official, detailed course-by-course evaluation of your dental school transcript and any other graduate degrees earned outside the United States, as well as a copy of your dental diploma and license, if applicable. Candidates must pass the NBDE Part I and NBDE Part II or the INBDE, Integrated National Board Dental Examination, to be considered for membership.
Applicants are required to submit three letters of evaluation. All letters must be signed and on letterhead of the letter writer's affiliated organization, school or dental office and must be in English. The program prefers that a letter come from the Dean or faculty member of the dental school from which the applicant graduated. The second letter should be from a dentist practicing in the United States who supervised or worked with the applicant in a clinical or educational setting or whom the applicant shadowed. The third letter must come from someone the applicant has supervised in a professional setting.
After submitting the ADEA CAAPID application and online ADEA fee, submit a $150 non-refundable application fee directly to the Adams School. Do not submit a payment until you have submitted your CAAPID application.

Successful applicants selected for an interview will be required to pay a bench test fee of $300. Information regarding payment of a bench test fee will be included in the invitation to Chapel Hill for an interview.
Applicants with strong academic qualifications and demonstrated commitment to the profession will be considered for a skills assessment (bench test) and personal interview. Formal letters of non-acceptance will not be sent to applicants not selected for an interview.
Applicants selected for personal interview and bench test will be invited to visit Adams School. The interview day includes an overview of the ASPID program, an in-person interview with faculty members of the ASPID admissions committee, and a bench test using mannequins in the preclinical laboratory. Individuals who are unable to attend on the scheduled interview date will not be eligible for admission.
Acceptance notifications are sent at the end of the selection process. For applicants offered entry into the program, a non-refundable deposit of $5,000 is expected within 14 days of receipt.

Offers of admission are not considered final and enrollment is not permitted until a criminal background check has been completed with results deemed favorable by Ysgol Adams.

Students who are not US citizens or US permanent residents will need to obtain an F-1 student visa to study at the Adams School and complete a Finance Certificate through the ISSS office.
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. The Office of Admissions at Adams School cannot be held responsible for any delays caused by the US Postal Service or other mail delivery systems. All application materials and documents become the property of Ysgol Adams and will not be returned to the applicant. Any application materials received after the acceptance cycle will be rejected.

GPR/AEGD stands for both General Practice Study Program and Graduate Program in General Dentistry respectively. Prior to graduate dental training, most of these programs were simply hospital internships. Over time the terminology has since changed to more postdoctoral programs such as AEGD which is a dental school, hospital, and based on its own. The GPR allows future dental students to receive clinical training where they can rotate as residents between specialties such as general medicine, general surgery and anesthesiology. AEGD offers advanced training in clinical dentistry that allows dentists to improve their skills and last for approximately one year. This training also covers the disciplines of diagnosis, treatment, patient management and administration.
Residency programs offer additional training in a specific specialty of dentistry similar to medical fellowships. If you are an international dentist, you are free to apply to these programs, but you are opposed to US dental graduates applying for a state license that will allow you to work in that state and a few others.

The INBDE is the Integrated National Board of Dental Examination devised and promoted by the Joint Commission on National Examinations (JCNDE). This exam, like the USMLE that residents must take before entering residence, is a prerequisite for applying to any of the above programs. There may sometimes be exceptions to the INBDE submission, but it is a mandatory requirement if you are an international dental student. It is expected to replace the NBDE (National Board Dental Examination) Part I and Part II. Part I ends and Part II will be completed by August 2022. The exam integrates biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences to demonstrate entry-level competency. The reason behind curating this new exam was to make improvements that are more relevant to dentistry and make it a better test taking experience.
