Apply For Affordable Housing Online - The Housing Choice Voucher Program, also known as Section 8, is part of Georgia's comprehensive housing program administered by the Georgia Department of Public Affairs (). It is a tenant-based rental assistance program that helps very low- and low-income individuals and families rent safe, decent, and affordable housing units in the private rental market. This program was created by the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 and funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The Department of Public Affairs provides direct subsidy payments to landlords on behalf of program participants. The subsidy amount is primarily based on the participant's income. Administers programs in 149 of Georgia's 159 counties through regional offices located throughout the state. The remaining 10 districts that do not have jurisdiction are served by county housing authorities.

Families who meet program eligibility and income are selected from a waiting list when funds and vouchers become available. Once a family is selected for a housing voucher option, they are required to attend an informational briefing to learn about the program's rules and their responsibilities to the program. When families receive their vouchers, they are responsible for finding a housing unit that matches their voucher size. Once a family finds a unit that meets their voucher criteria and the unit passes HUD housing quality standards, subsidy payments will begin, on behalf of the family, directly to the owner.
Portability refers to the ability to move and choose housing anywhere in the United States with an advanced lease. The Georgia Department of Public Affairs administers the Resident Choice Voucher program in 149 of the 159 states. The 10 counties that are not operating are: Bibb, Chatham, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb (Decatur), Fulton (Atlanta), Glenn, Muskogee, Richmond and Sumter. These districts are served by their respective housing authorities. If you wish to move to one of these areas, please contact the housing authority that administers the Choice of Residence Voucher for that area regarding your mobility. See our frequently asked questions about our port-in process. This information must be used by the voucher holder when transferring to our program from another housing authority.
