A July 19, 1984 Los Angeles Times article on area codes includes a map of two Los Angeles area codes.
Area Code For Beverly Hills
Long ago, when the world was young and there were only landlines, one area code ruled all calls from the Mexican border to Bakersfield: 213.
Telecom Giants Want New Split Of Area Codes / Most Bay Area Cities Would Be Affected
Then they began to divide and multiply. 714, 805 and L.A. became the first cities to have three area codes within the city limits.
Nearly 75 years after the birth of 213, Los Angeles County now has 10 area codes.
Does your area code ring a bell? In a megalopolis that mixes indistinguishable towns and villages, a place that demolishes the historical monuments that other cities depend on to navigate their identities, we are content with what we have.
In 1991, a year before the new 310 area code took more than 2 million phones out of reach of 213, sociologist James Katz, who studied the social impact of telephone technology, found that Californians were more concerned about area code identities as people. They said it was more difficult. Elsewhere it has been said that these three-digit numbers are like the cardinal points on our mind map, "by subtracting them you erase, in a sense, your identity".

Los Angeles is a complicated place. In this weekly dossier, Patt Morrison explains how it works, its history and its culture.
Since the "big bang" of the original 213 separated too many area codes, what happened to this identifier? The author of a 1994 Times article comically explained what the numerologist told him. The original hardcore heart of L.A., 213 is the working-class and "unpretentious" area code. How could a numerologist overlook the fact that 213 is also an area code for the citizens of Los Angeles and is almost exclusively about political assertions? 310's phones occupy a "more noble, ritualized, barren environment", and 818's phone users (from valley to valley, from San Fernando to San Gabriel) are the embodiment of "old-fashioned stand-up values". school".
The numerologist found, to his satisfaction, that Manhattan's coveted 212 represented "some trifle...the Los Perots of the area code." Exhibit A: The episode "Seinfeld" where Elaine takes over her deceased neighbor's number 212 in a desperate attempt to recover her lost number 212.
L.A. is a place like no other. I have a question. Patt Morrison probably has the answer and will be able to figure it out for sure.

The geography of the phone can be an identity, but not a destiny. Can't afford a house in Laguna Beach? Buying a phone number for sale on a website like phonenumberguy.com always gets you the golden number of 949 area code status, unrealistic yacht brokers and housewives.
Site owner Ed Mance told the Washington Post a few years ago that 310 is the most coveted of all area codes. " It's very rare. People can't get 310s anymore, even random 310s. When it comes to recent overlays, we're downright snobbish. "Nobody wants a 424, especially if you're in business," Mance said.
Question: If all area codes are sold out so quickly that the phone company keeps requesting new numbers, why aren't phone numbers in desirable area codes charged?
In 1999, when major telecommunications SBCs lobbied the federal government to allow area code overlays nationwide, California's Public Utilities Commission called on the federal government to get the phone companies to act. as honest intermediaries. The CPUC said Californians were already "excited that the 'shortage' numbers were entirely contrived and the need for new area codes was wrong."

Who managed this area code in the first place? Why did Vermont get 802 and Southern California 213?
The answer is the word "compose". We got rid of the keyboard dial, but in 1947, the year the area code was released, "cht-cht-cht" was the sound of a rotating dial being put back in place.
Therefore, the lower the digits of a phone number, the less time it takes to call back the next call. Larger cities such as Manhattan, Los Angeles, and Chicago have lower number area codes such as 212, 213, and 312 that can be dialed faster. States with low population density were assigned higher numbers. In Vermont and Hawaii, locals love hoodies and hats printed with the state's only area codes, 802 and 808, as if they were graduating from area code colleges.

Area codes 310 and 424 are North American Numbering Plan (NANP) telephone area codes for the US state of California. The planned numbering area includes the West Los Angeles and South Bay areas of Los Angeles County, a small portion of Vtura County, and Santa Catalina Island, 26 miles to the south.
Area code 310 was created on November 2, 1991 as a fork of area code 213. On January 25, 1997, area code 310 was split to create area code 562 for the southeastern portion of Los Angeles County and much of Orange County. Area code 424 was added to the remaining areas of the numbering plan on July 26, 2006 in California's first overlay plan.

Area code 562 was originally designated as an overlay code for cellular and pager service in the existing 310 area. The overlays were planned for late 1995 and were to expand to locations 213 and 818 the following year.
But that plan was changed to a 310 split, and the California Public Utilities Commission determined the overlay would penalize small-business subscribers for requiring t-digit dialing.
Parts south and east of 310, the gateway urban area of Los Angeles County from approximately Long Beach to Whittier, and parts of Orange County became area code 562 on January 25, 1997.

Instead of executing a new split, a new 424 region code was implemented in the Tire 310 region first announced in early 1999. Los Angeles International Airport's southern boundary. The South Bay below the boundary would have been given area code 424. The South Bay government and businesses opposed the move because it would require costly changes to business cards, stationery, signage, and other commercial communications only eight years after the previous amendment. The area code for your region.
The announcement of the 424 Overlay caused an uproar in the politically powerful Westside community of Los Angeles. Partly because the change forces you to dial the t digit even when dialing an area code. Supported by Los Angeles Times columnist Robert Scheer in the paper's Santa Monica insert, a protest movement centered on the idea of preserving phone numbers began in May 1999. The numbers carried over from the days of the analog telephone system were still assigned to telephone companies in increments of 10,000, resulting in a high percentage of unused telephone numbers in each area code. In response to the controversy, the California State Legislature passed the Consumer Area Code Relief Act of 1999 on September 9, 1999, and the 424 overlay was passed.
After being discontinued for nearly seven years, the 424 overlay was finally implemented on July 26, 2006, and new phone numbers issued in the 310 area code can now begin with 310 or 424. On December 31, 2005, customers dialed the area code 1+310 each time they dialed the area code + the multi-digit number (mobile phones may omit the "1"). After July 26, 2006, customers had to use the new dialing procedure for all calls.
