Southern California is at its peak in the summer. The weather is ideal: mid-60s overnight near the coast and daytime highs in the mid-80s. The holiday season is in full swing and there's a party day for everything under the sun.

Of course, one of my favorite things to do in the summer in Southern California is to relax on the beach. I love the super chic Laguna Beach, the cool El Matador, the famous Venice Beach, and the super fun Santa Monica Pier.
One of the things I love most about Southern California is that you can travel the world without leaving the city limits. Want to party at Oktoberfest? Places like Standard Biergarten, Steingarten LA, Verdugo, or the many German-loving bars around LA can rival Germany's biggest parties.
Another great thing to do in Southern California in the fall is check out the many food festivals. Two of my top picks are the California Lemon Festival in Goleta in October and the Taste of Downtown San Diego in early September.

California has some of the best weather in the United States, so don't let winter stop you from visiting. Temperatures in much of Southern California will range from the mid-50s to the mid-70s. While it's not bikini weather, it's usually very warm and perfect for exploring.
While Northern California may be great for skiing, the South is a surfing paradise. For starters, head to Manhattan Beach or Malibu Beach. If you have experience, check out La Jolla Shores or Rincon. For true professionals, the waves at San Diego's Trestles and Blacks Beach will blow your mind.
Before heading inland, make sure you go whale watching too! From mid-December to mid-March, more than 25,000 California gray whales roam the coast of San Diego.

Of course, you can't go to Southern California without giving in to your Hollywood dreams. Festival season kicks off in January with the Palm Springs International Film Festival. It's an indoor favorite and a must-see for any moviegoer.
Spring is definitely one of the best times to visit Southern California. The tourists haven't caught up yet and prices are still lower than you'll see in the summer season.
Culture Vulture members should attend Smithsonian Magazine's live coverage of Museum Day, which takes place throughout Los Angeles in mid-March and offers free admission to several museums.
Festival season starts early here, with Coachella and the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in April in inner LA. Less famous but just as amazing is the Rooftop Cinema festival. The festival, which takes place throughout the month of April, screens classic films on the rooftops of Hollywood.

Food warnings. Whiteout watches. Avalanche hazards. The warnings are extremely unusual in Southern California, an area characterized by sunshine, palm trees and warm weather.
But Los Angeles and other surrounding counties are bracing for a blizzard the likes of which has not been seen in decades, if not ever.

"It could be very important," said UCLA climate scientist Daniel Swain. "In fact, the snowfall could be historically significant in parts of the Southern California mountains. This puddle could be the largest single-event snowfall in parts of Southern California since the 1980s. It's a big deal."
The storm, which has already wreaked havoc in parts of Northern California, is expected to strengthen as it approaches Southern California early Friday morning.
The "very dynamic" system will bring heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms and possible localized flooding to Los Angeles and surrounding areas, Swain said. Snow levels could drop below 1,500 feet in the mountains of LA and Ventura counties, roughly the height of the Hollywood sign, where residents said a wintry mix had landed Thursday afternoon.
"It's a very rare event," said Jeff Zarrinnam, president of the Hollywood Sign Trust, which snowballed under the world-famous landmark.

The system is led by a low pressure area off the coast of California that is slowly moving south from Canada.
Similar winter conditions existed in 1989 — the first and only time the Weather Service issued a snow warning for the LA area — when Tom Bradley was LA mayor and gas sold for about $1 a gallon. That storm dropped up to 5 inches in parts of San Fernando and Simi Valley, snow "from the Malibu Mountains to the streets of Palm Springs," The Times reported at the time.
According to Times archives, Snow also occurred in 2019, 2007, 1998, 1987 and 1974. In 1962, heavy snow fell in the mountains and high desert and dusted parts of downtown and West Los Angeles before quickly melting.

Southern California Home Prices Fall For The 1st Time In 7 Years
Perhaps the most famous blizzard was in January 1949, when the region received several inches of snow over several days. Times articles at the time described 14 inches of snow on Ventura Boulevard near Woodland Hills, foothills in Laurel Canyon and light swirling around the LA Civic Center.
"The Times switchboard received numerous calls from residents from all parts of the city who described the winter scenes 'like in the East,'" one 1949 story said.
What sets the current system apart, however, is the potential for snowfall in the mountains around Los Angeles, which could be more than 3 to 4 feet over a 48-hour period, or as much as 8 feet on high mountain peaks. The prediction is so significant that Mt. Baldy Resort has closed its slopes because most winters there is not enough snow to run all the trails.
"A large storm system is moving into the area," station officials wrote in an Instagram post. "Not only is it big, but some are calling it a potential state record."

Forecasters say nearly 100 inches of fresh dust could fall on Mount Baldy and other high-altitude areas. Even places that don't normally see snow should get a dusting, including 12 inches between 2,500 and 4,000 feet and up to 4 inches between 1,500 and 2,500 feet.
The National Weather Service issued snow warnings from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. Heavy snow, gusty winds and "near zero visibility" are likely Saturday in the mountains of Ventura, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. A flash flood watch is also in effect for parts of Santa Barbara and Los Angeles through Saturday, with 0.75 inches of rain per hour possible.
"What's really surprising is the amount of snow predicted in the mountains of Southern California and the southern Sierra Nevada," Swain said.
While many winter storms move up the Sierra spine and lose moisture by the time they reach Southern California, an incoming low pressure system moves down the Canadian coast where it is loaded with moisture from the Pacific, he said.

Patzert said cold temperatures and strong, moist winds from the Pacific Ocean "are the ingredients for feeding California.
