For answers, check out these nine findings from the report "HIV in America's Deep South: Trends 2008 to 2019."
States With Highest Aids Rate
Looking at 11 years of HIV data in the United States, the researchers found that the US South, particularly the US Deep South, experiences a disproportionate burden of HIV. For example, nine states in the Deep South accounted for 29% of the US population in 2019, but accounted for nearly 44% of all new HIV diagnoses that year. That means new HIV in the Deep South. It has one of the highest HIV-related death rates.

The data is compiled in "HIV in America's Deep South: Trends 2008 to 2019," a 24-page report prepared by the Southern AIDS Coalition, the Center for Health Policy and Disparities Research at Duke University, and the Duke Global Health Institute.

The Deep South consists of the following nine states that share similar cultures: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. The remaining southern states are Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
Below are two images from the report that illustrate overall trends in HIV diagnoses, comparing regions and states in the Deep South:

The report was released in conjunction with the third annual Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAD) held every August 20. This year's theme – Support, Action, Change – honored 20 years of work at the Southern AIDS Coalition.
Elsewhere in the report, the authors note that among individual states in the Deep South, Georgia had the highest rate of new HIV diagnoses (26.2 per 100,000 people), followed by Florida (23.9) and Louisiana (23.0).
Still, all is not black. For example, although the region leads the nation in new HIV diagnoses, the South saw a steady decline in new HIV rates from 2008 to 2019. In fact, each of the four US regions saw a downward trend.
"This report documents the currently available data on HIV epidemiology and describes the relevant sociological, economic, and health factors that influence the disproportionate burden of HIV in the Deep South," said Dr. Susan Reif, research associate at Duke University and author of the report, in a press release from the Southern AIDS Coalition.

Reif continued, "In order to successfully respond to the goals of ending the HIV epidemic by funding and developing and implementing effective HIV prevention and care programs, it is essential to document current HIV epidemiological trends and better understand their antecedents and associated implications. Focuses on eight priority counties in California: Alameda, Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, and San Francisco. COVID-19 has increased the burden of addressing the HIV epidemic, including diverting staff, services and resources.
The graph above shows the prevalence of HIV for eight priority districts. The relative size of the COVID-19 epidemic for each district is indicated by the blue circles. Hover over the circle markers to see HIV and Covid-19 prevalence rates per 100,000 population for each district. Click on markers for HIV and Covid-19 race/ethnicity charts.
In the United States, the rate of people living with HIV (PLWH) in 2020 was 379.7 per 100,000 population. In California, the rate was slightly higher at 406 per 100,000 people. As of June 27, 2022, California's rate of total COVID-19 cases was 25,336 per 100,000, compared to 26,162 per 100,000 in the United States. Case rates in the past 7 days were 328 and 212.3 per 100,000 in California and the US, respectively.

For each EHE priority district, we record the racial/ethnic composition of each district, the racial/ethnic composition of people living with HIV, and the racial/ethnic composition of deaths due to Covid-19.
It should be noted that in the above comparison, Covid-19 deaths are used, as data on the race/ethnicity of those diagnosed with Covid-19 is incomplete.
Data on HIV rates are for the most recent year, 2020, and were taken from the CDC Atlas Plus database. CDC's COVID-19 surveillance data for national, state, and county-level Covid-19 case rates for the past 7 days.
Differences related to Covid-19 appear more prominent using age-adjusted or death rates by race/ethnicity. At this time, we omit them here because of the eight EHE counties, Los Angeles County is the only county that provides age-appropriate rates by race/ethnicity. There was no indication that rate data were age-adjusted by race/ethnicity provided in Alameda, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco counties. San Bernardino and Orange counties do not release raw or adjusted rates.

County-level race/ethnicity data for People Living with HIV (PLWH) 2020 from CDC Atlas Plus. The data on the number of deaths due to Covid-19 was taken from the respective websites or dashboards of each district. Population columns labeled “Other/Multiple/Unknown” correspond to the percentage of the county's population classified as multiracial. For the number of people infected with HIV and the number of deaths from Covid-19, the “other/multiple/unknown” label includes people classified as other or multiracial and people of unknown or undeclared race. Bars labeled "AI/AN" and "NH/OPI" represent American Indian/Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.
Unlike other counties, San Bernardino reports Covid-19 data separately by race and ethnicity. Its statistics on Covid-19 show whether or not individuals identify as Latino. Its statistics on COVID-19 by race exclude the Hispanic/Latino category, where Hispanic/Latino individuals can be of any race (ie, Asian, black, white, multiracial). Two crossed lines form an 'X'. Hiv & Aids Trends And U.s. Statistics Overview
Proportion of people living with HIV per 100,000 people in the United States, by county. AIDS
The disease soon became an epidemic, but medical advances since then have made HIV manageable with drugs — especially if detected early.
However, 1.1 million Americans are currently living with HIV in the United States, and thousands more die from AIDS each year.
AIDSVu, led by Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, has partnered with biotech company GileadSciences to map HIV by county since 2010.
Which U.s. Region Sees The Highest Rates Of Hiv Diagnoses And Deaths?
On Wednesday, it released its latest data—graphs showing HIV prevalence since 2014, as well as new diagnoses from 2008 to 2015. Here's what the researchers found.
AIDSVu gets its data from state and city health departments, which collect information at the local level. This graph shows the number of new HIV diagnoses, with darker purple indicating higher diagnoses in a given district.
By mapping HIV rates at the local level, public health officials can gain insight into which groups (in terms of geography or demographics) should focus more on. Here's a breakdown of Seattle by zip code - the first time AIDSVu has collected detailed information about the city.
Dr. Patrick Sullivan, the project's principal investigator, told Business Insider that Southern states have the highest rates of HIV. In this graph, dark red shows areas with more than 381 diagnoses per 100,000 people.

In fact, the five cities with the highest rates of new diagnoses are all in the South: Miami, Jackson, New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Atlanta. Here's a breakdown of Atlanta by zip code - dark purple with more than 114 new areas.
