Our story begins on March 22, 1922 in Los Angeles, California, with the birth of Alex Xydias. Although his father was a famous producer of silent films, Alex's childhood was relatively ordinary, and like most young boys, he was naturally drawn to automobiles. His first hot rod, a '29 Ford Roadster with a milled head and cut-off steering wheel, which he bought at Fairfax High School, he paid for with part-time income. After graduation, Alex worked at a gas station and saved enough for a '34 three-window coupe, and then found a beautiful '34 convertible found in the basement garage of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. In 1940, Alex joined The Wheelers, a Southern California Timing Association club located in Norwalk, California. However, his life, like many young men, was about to change when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942, serving as a B-17 engineer. Alex says, "During the war we talked about cars, and once I got my license, a friend took me to a road race in the San Fernando Valley. I was amazed at how fast the cars were going. The idea was to open a speed shop." On the day of his discharge, March 3, 1946, using borrowed money, Alex opened the first So-Cal Speed Shop on Olive Avenue in Burbank. "It's been really hard for me to keep going," says Alex. "At times, I would make less than $100 a month, but the hard work paid off. When my one-year lease was up, I moved the shop to 1104 South Victory Boulevard in Burbank and put it in a Sears Roebuck prefab two-car garage." Hot rods with the So-Cal logo ran through the company very quickly. For example, a V8-60-powered Bellytank Lakester hit 136 mph in 1948 and was featured on the cover of Hot Rod magazine in January 1949. This early success was quickly confirmed when he teamed up with legendary car enthusiast and author Alex Dean Batchelor to develop a purpose-built Streamliner. Powered by a Mercury V8 supplied by Edelbrock, the liner hit 210 mph in 1950. The following year, Alex and some racing buddies formed the So-Cal Speed Shop Racing Team and built the first 160, 170, 180 and 190 hot rods. mph In 1952, Mechanics Illustrated magazine named the So-Call gang the number one racing team.
