If Apple does nothing else, it's one thing that makes the 16-inch MacBook Pro 2019 better than its predecessor and any other MacBook you can buy right now. The tide really turned on Apple's butterfly keyboard design last year, thanks to constant reporting by Casey Johnston and Joanna Stern, and Apple had to.
Apple Macbook Pro 16 Inch Review: The Best Mac In Years
But Apple's withdrawal from the keyboard isn't the only home designed to address complaints about the MacBook line. Apple has changed the way laptops dissipate heat, allowing processors to run faster and more reliably. It also brings back the physical Esc key and arrow layout that most professional users love.
There are a few other updates compared to the 15-inch model—including, yes, the 16-inch laptop screen. But the keyboard and thermals are the big innovations that show Apple is willing to look back to move forward.
I'm pretty shocked to say that the keyboard looks great right now. I've reviewed most MacBooks with butterfly keyboards, and each time I didn't care for the feel of the keys. It had a kind of jumpy feel that - to me - almost deserved a weird sound. But all these reviews are written after a week or two of use, which is not enough time to deal with reliability issues.
I've had this 16-inch MacBook Pro for the same amount of time, but I call it fixed anyway because the new switch mechanism under the keys is a more traditional scissor switch - known size. Apple says it's based on the Magic Keyboard that ships with the iMac, and it sure does.

As a keyboard it is right up there in my favorites right now. (For the record, one at the top of the list is the Pixelbook Go's silent keyboard.) Apple's new keyboard has a full millimeter of travel (about 0.5mm approximately than the butterfly keyboard and 0.5mm less than the 2015 MacBook Pro keyboard ). And while the buttons aren't too bouncy, they do come with a satisfying, relatively quiet thump.
Apple says it changed the way the switch caps are attached to improve stability across the keys. The backlight also doesn't bleed around the edges of the buttons. Finally, the discs are smaller than those of the butterfly shape, which allows them to be slightly apart and - critically - the touch bar. The "inverted T" layout of the arrow keys is easier to use than the old layout.
The physical Esc key shortens the Touch Bar a bit, but I don't see any issues with the lost length. That's probably because, like most people, the Touch Bar is something I put on but not something I enjoy. Apple believes in it, and the potential is still there. But overall, I find it less useful than a row of function keys. I use a tool called Pock to dock my Mac there instead of the default, but even then the Touch Bar isn't necessary for me.
Inside Apple, I'm sure there are engineers who still believe that a butterfly keyboard can be built. Perhaps so, but the design of equipment must consider culture as much as engineering. Even if Apple could create a perfectly reliable butterfly keyboard with decent key travel and quiet clicks, no one would believe it. Apple had no choice, and I'm glad they accepted the inevitable.

The only question now is when other Apple laptops will get the new (old) keyboard design. Apple, of course, does not even indicate. But there are signs: the company has spent the last year doing the obvious things that everyone has been asking for: improved access to iPadOS USB, a compact phone with a bigger battery, and a Mac Pro that is modular again. We hope 2020 will be the same.
We can get away with many standard "laptops" because Apple has done a good job with the basics. The trackpad is still almost ridiculous, but Apple is better than anyone at palm rejection. It still has four Thunderbolt 3 ports, and it still has a fingerprint sensor for input. But unfortunately there is no SD card slot.
The display - the name of this laptop - is typical Apple, which means it's good. In fact, it is not an inch larger than the 15-inch version (which actually has a 15.4-inch display), and it does not feel more spacious. It is a large retina display with accurate colors. I think that in the next iteration of this design - which should have been a few years ago - Apple should aim higher. But OLED and HDR screens on laptops are still rare, and I think Apple was right to nail the basics.
The 16-inch model is slightly larger than the 15-inch model in three dimensions, but you won't notice much unless you compare it side-by-side. If you have a bag that fits a 15-inch MacBook Pro, I'd be surprised if it doesn't also fit a 16-inch laptop.

In addition to the larger screen, one of the reasons why it is bigger is that it has a full 100Wh battery, which is the limit of the Federal Aviation Administration for laptops that can be accepted on airplanes. It also comes with a 96W charger to match. Apple claims that the battery lasts up to 11 hours including web browsing and other non-essential tasks. I didn't get there much - about eight hours on average - but overall, I think it's a bit better than the last model.
If there's one place Apple could do better with the device, it's the webcam. Still something weird at 720p. Another area where Apple needs to do better is macOS Catalina. Even now, almost two months since its launch, it is still less than it should be.
Every smart device now requires you to agree to a set of terms and conditions before you can use it — a contract that no one ever reads. It is not possible to read and analyze each of these agreements. But we've actually started counting how many times you have to hit "agree" to use tools when we review them because it's an agreement that most people don't read and can't negotiate.
These terms are non-negotiable and you may not use the laptop unless you agree to them. There are also deals available, including:

My favorite part of the 16-inch MacBook Pro isn't the keyboard or the improved heat. (More on that below).
