That's why today I want to talk to you about one of the most...well...advanced insurance companies.
Compare Homeowners Insurance Quotes For May 2023
Progressive was one of the first insurance companies to launch a website (in 1995!), and was also one of the first to offer comparison shopping.
So Advanced has really been one step ahead of the customer experience curve for decades. But now that insurtech startups like Lemonade have joined the fray with low-price-first plans, can progressives really find the best rates? What is their coverage? Is the improved user experience still reliable?
This is what I wanted to know. So I did what I always do when I test insurance providers that I've heard good things about. I built real home insurance from top to bottom starting with my coverage.
Did you know: The leading comparison shopping in the early 1990s. 1-800-AUTO-PRO was the first free 24-hour auto insurance estimate service.

But something you may not know is that Progressive works with 13 other insurance companies, including nationwide, so it's likely that the coverage I'm sharing with you will vary from company to company.
Homeowner's tip: Homesite, one of Progressive's top insurers, gave me a cheaper quote than I could get on Progressive's own HomeQuote Explorer (see below). So don't just rely on the advanced search engine. If you find an insurance company you like, try to get a direct quote as well.
ACV or RCV? Two basics you need to know: In general, if you have a choice between choosing the actual cash value (ACV) - the amount that my insurance company thinks my things are worth regardless of what I buy them. Years later—and replacement value (RCV)—when I lose track of how much it really costs to buy anything—I always choose RCV. Otherwise, the $5,000 designer couch I bought in 2016 is only $250 worth of used furniture when it's time to replace it.
Progressive is a large company and insures just about everything under the sun, so if you don't see what you want on this list, it's probably because Progressive sells it as a separate policy, not as additional coverage. as

For example, Progressive offers phone and device insurance — think equipment breakdown coverage for your gadgets — for $158 a year. But they don't offer the extra coverage for personal electronics that you'll find in a more flexible Lemonade plan.
Pro tip: The one thing advanced can't protect you from is your identity. For that, you'll want to check out our guide to the best identity theft protection services in 2023.
Standard Relocation vs. Extended Relocation: If I estimate that I will need $350,000 to renovate my home, and I cover that amount myself—eg. Standard replacement - isn't that a bit much? Not necessary. This additional increase in coverage, which we call the extended replacement, is really just inflation protection that will cover me if construction costs (labor, materials, demand) increase in the intervening years, which they almost always do. does
Progressive's Home Coat Explorer is a comparison shopping engine. If you're considering Expedia for your home insurance, I don't want to get your hopes up, but HomeQuote Explorer is not it. In other words, it does not take prices from the market at large. It matches your insurance profile with the best product among these plans and the plans of 13 companies it works with.

Another thing I want to point out is that HomeQuote Explorer only gave me an outline of my quote. I had to finalize the details with the agent. So there are no instant rates and allowances.
The Home Coat Explorer did a really neat trick that I really liked. He asked me to choose from three priorities before raising my premium: "low rate", "more coverage" and "both are important". I found this very helpful because even if I can't get to the bottom of my policy online with Progressive, I can at least get a sense of the range of rates I'm looking at.
Did you know: In 2017, Progressive was the first insurance company to support Google Assistant. Users can't get a quote or make a claim, but they can ask for advice on home and car insurance.
One thing I quickly discovered when looking for my advanced premium is that when my priority was more coverage, I ended up with, well, more coverage.
Six Home Insurance Comparison Site Quirks To Watch Out For
For a typical image, the house in question was 1,884 square feet. Colonies in a low-risk area in New Jersey. The list price was $260,000, or about the national average. My price reflects a security device discount as the property had fire and security alarms and deadbolts. Here's what Progressive told me.
Ouch! That's $152.50 a month or about $30 more than my Lemonade offer for the same house. Was the developer trying to rush me? They weren't. They gave me what I wanted: risk-free home insurance. To test this claim, let's see what happens when saving is my priority.
Homeowner's Tip: Not sure how much home insurance you need? Here is a quick way to estimate. Take the total square footage of your home and multiply it by the construction cost per square foot in your area. You can leave the land value out of the equation.
$98 a month is a number I like better. Also note that this quote is from Nationwide, a subsidiary of Progressive. I have previously written in detail about countrywide rates and these numbers apply.

Here's a breakdown of my first (very expensive) quote so you can see exactly what it entails in broad brush strokes.
FYI: Progressive first introduced usage-based auto insurance in 2008. Today, the Progressive Snapshot program follows in that tradition and provides insurance quotes for customers based on how they actually drive.
The range between $98 and $152 per month is obviously huge. Just remember that I insured a 16-year-old home for $260,000 at low risk. Your situation will probably be different. You may also find a better deal with one of the developing partners. Note that HomeQuote Explorer does not always show me the best quotes.
Is working with Progressive as much fun as watching Flo from Progressive TV commercials? yes and no In 2020, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported a sharp increase in advanced consumer complaints. Progressive scored an uncomfortably high 9.02, or nine times the industry average
Homeowners Insurance Guide: A Beginner's Overview
But Progressive works with different insurance companies. Nationwide, for example, has a developed partner, caliber .53, which is half the industry average. The good news is that by moving forward, you will be able to choose your own home insurance provider. My advice is to look up the NAIC consumer complaint ratings by code and choose wisely.3
Did you know: In his recent study on digital experience, J.D. Power has the second highest ranking in customer satisfaction
FYI: AM Best, the leading name in insurance industry financial ratings, has given Progressive an A+ (excellent) financial stability rating.
Advanced writes policies in most states, but that doesn't mean they'll be able to hook you up with the insurance company of your choice. The easiest way to find out who Progressive writes policies in your area and who they work with is to try HomeQuote Explorer. It only takes a few minutes.
Best Homeowners Insurance In Connecticut
Progressive is an insurance store full of packages, benefits and discounts. They also work with 13 other top US insurance companies so I pretty much guarantee competitive pricing. The online bidding process was simple, if bare bones, but Progressive has a great online knowledge base and an agent in my area was only a phone call away.
Homeowner's Tip: Insurance companies calculate your premium based on your credit history and claims history, so your insurance score can affect your home insurance rate. The idea is that credit history can predict insurance risk. The higher your insurance score, the cheaper your premium will be.
I'm really picky about my insurance policies and want to make as many changes online as possible. Advanced didn't give me much room for fine tuning.
I would also like to complete my offer online if possible. I can't make progress. He needed a phone call. The same goes for claiming, which may be a step back in time for anyone who has claimed a video. (See my Liberty Mutual homeowners review for an inside look at the video compromise).
