Does Progressive Cover Homeowners Insurance - SecureScore™: 8.8 / 10 This rating is based on research by our editorial team, product testing and customer surveys.
If you are a homeowner, you know that security is very important. This means that you should take your personal insurance as seriously as your home insurance, and vice versa. After all, home insurance is home security. A strong policy will protect your home (and money!) against all kinds of threats.
Does Progressive Cover Homeowners Insurance
That's why today I want to talk to you about one of the most advanced motor homes out there.
Progressive Insurance Reviews: Pros & Cons (2023)
Progressive was one of the first insurance companies to launch a website (back in 1995!), and one of the first to offer comparison shopping.
So Progressive has really been one step ahead of the customer experience curve for decades. But now that insurtech startups like Lemonade have joined the fray with first-time customer plans for less, can Progressive really find the best rates? How does their community actually work? Is improved customer experience still reliable?
What I want to find out. So I did what I always do when I check out the insurance provider I've heard good things about. I did a real home insurance exercise from top to bottom, starting with my cover.
Did you know: The launch of comparison shopping in the early 1990s. 1-800-AUTO-PRO is the industry's premier toll-free, 24/7 auto insurance comparison service.
Progressive Homeowners Insurance Review 2023
But one thing you may not know is that Progressive partners with 13 other insurance companies, including nationwide, so the coverage I want to share with you will likely vary from company to company.1
Homeowner's tip: HomeQuote, one of Progressive's sponsors, gave me a cheaper quote than the one I got from Progressive's HomeQuote Explorer (see below). So don't rely on Advanced search engine alone. If you find an insurer you like, try getting a direct quote as well.
ACV or RCV? Two acronyms to know: In general, if there is a choice between the actual value option (ACV) - the amount my insurance thinks my item is worth a few years after I buy it - and the replacement value (RCV) - how much it really is. durable. Costs to buy everything again while I lose - I always go with RCV. However, the $5,000 designer sofa I bought in 2016 is only $250 worth of used furniture when it comes time to replace it.
Progressive is a big company and it's guaranteed about everything under the sun, so if you don't see something you want on this list, it's probably because Progressive sells it as a separate policy, not as a coverage add-on.
Does Homeowners Insurance Cover Termite Damage?
For example, Progressive offers phone and device insurance — think utility coverage for your devices — for $158 a year. But they don't offer additional personal electronics coverage like you'll find in the more customizable Lemonade plan.
Pro Tip: Something Advanced can help you protect your identity. For that, you'll want to check out our guide to the best identity theft protection services of 2023.
Variable Coverage vs. Basic Replacement Estimate: If I estimate I'll need $350,000 to rebuild my home, and I cover myself for that amount — ie, standard replacement — isn't that over the line? Not necessarily. Local additions, which are called extended replacement, are basically an additional protection to cover me in the event that construction costs (labor, materials, demand) rise in the intervening years, which they almost always do.
Progressive's HomeQuote Explorer is a comparison shopping engine. If you're thinking of Expedia for home insurance, I don't want to get your hopes up, but HomeQuote Explorer is not. It doesn't pull quotes from the market at all, in other words. It matches your insurance profile to the best product between your plans and the plans of the 13 companies you partner with.
Progressive Car Insurance Coverage: 2023 Guide
Another thing I would like to point out is that HomeQuote Explorer only gives me a thumbnail of my quote. Good points that I have to finish with an agent. So there are no instant quotes and no compatibility.
HomeQuote Explorer does a neat trick that I really like. He asked me to choose from three priorities before pulling my tax: "low cost," "more local," and "both are important." I find this very useful because even if I can't get into the nitty-gritty of my policy online with Progressive, I can get a sense of the range of rates I'll be looking at.
Did you know: In 2017, Progressive was the first insurance company to support Google Assistant. Users can't get a quote or file a claim, but they can ask for advice on home and car insurance.
One thing I discovered quickly when I thought my game improved was that when my priority was more coverage, I ended up getting, well, a lot more coverage.
Homeowners Insurance And Water Damage
To give a rough picture, the house in question is 1,884 sq. ft. Colony in the low risk area of New Jersey. The list price is $260,000, or about the national average. My rate shows a discount on security devices. because the property has fire and security alarms, and the dead. This is what Progressive told me.
Ugh! That's $152.50 a month, or about $30 more than my Lemonade quote for the exact same house. Is Progressive trying to pull a fast one on me? They are not. They just gave me what I asked for: a safe environment. To put this claim to the test, let's see what happens when saving is my first priority.
Advice for the homeowner: Not sure how much home insurance you need? This is a quick way to calculate. Take the total square footage of your home and multiply it by the home prices per square foot in your area. You can leave the land value out of the equation.
$98 a month is the number I like the most. Also note that this quote is from a nationwide, progressive partner. I've written in detail about national rates before, and these numbers check out.

Here's a breakdown of my first quote (more expensive) so you can see exactly what's included in the broad brushstrokes.
FYI: Progressive first launched "source-based" auto insurance back in 2008. Today, Progressive's Snapchat plan follows in that tradition, basing customers' insurance rates on actual driving value.
A rate between $98 and $152 per month is certainly great. Please remember I insure a 16 year old, $260,000 home in a low risk situation. Your situation may be different. You can also find a better deal from one of our Progressive partners. Remember, HomeQuote Explorer doesn't always show me the best rates.
Is working with Progressive as fun as watching Flo from Progressive TV commercials? Yes and no. In 2020, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported a significant increase in ongoing consumer complaints. Progressive is the highest inconvenience at 9.02, or nine times the industry average.2

But Progressive works with a bunch of different insurance companies. For example, throughout the country, the progressive partner, is at 0.53 pure, or half of the industry average. The good news is that with Progressive, you will have the option to choose your home insurance provider. My advice is to check the NAIC consumer complaint rates by code and choose wisely.3
Did you know: In their latest digital experience study, J.D. Efficiency ranks second in the improvement level of customer satisfaction.4
FYI: AM Best, the top name in the insurance industry, has given Progressive an A+ (Superior) financial stability rating.
Progressive writes policies in many states, but that doesn't mean they'll be able to match you with the insurer you choose. The easiest way to find out if Progressive writes a policy in your area, and who you partner with there, is to take HomeQuote Explorer for a spin. It will take a few minutes.

Advanced is an insurance store full of programs, benefits and discounts. They also partner with 13 other top insurance companies in the US, so I'm almost guaranteed to get a competitive rate. The online quote process is simple, if sketchy, but Progressive has a large online knowledge base, and that an agent in my area is just a phone call away.
Homeowner's Tip: Insurers calculate your premium based on your credit history and claims, so your insurance score can affect your home insurance rate. The idea is that credit history can predict insurance risk. The higher your motor score, the cheaper your premium will be.
I'm really into my insurance plans, and I like to make as many changes online as possible. Progressive doesn't give me much room for a good spin.
In particular, I also want to be able to complete my thesis online. With progress, I can't. You need a phone call. The same goes for filing a claim, which can take a step back in time for anyone who submits a video complaint. (See my Brother's Independent Homeowners Review for an inside look at video accommodations.)
