MEDINA, Ohio -- The Ohio Library Board has announced that it has received its annual Library Innovation Award for providing a GED testing center.

In 2017, MCDL became the official examination site for Secondary School Equivalence Certificate. In the first year, the library offered six test dates and 34 test sessions were completed.

The Brunswick library partnered for a while with the Polaris Career Center to offer GED classes designed to help students pass the test, and the Medina library hosted ProjectLEARN tutors who worked with students, but Medina County did not have a testing center. .
This meant that citizens who completed the GED requirements had to travel 45 to 60 minutes away to the testing center.
Who Takes The Ged?
A year ago, an innovation team composed of Madina Library employees decided to implement the idea of organizing an examination center.
"We felt it would do an important service to break down barriers for people trying to improve their lives," said Medina Library Manager Kristin Gramm, a team member.
"It took us a year to get ready, but we decided to do it," said technology manager Sue Schuldt, another member of the innovation team.
All exams are online and there are dozens of special rules regarding the computer systems used for the exams.

Personnel performing the test should be trained and tested annually. Currently, four employees are available; Each test requires two people to work in a secure area. Seven to 10 people can sit at a time in the library's examination center.

"One of the biggest changes to the 2014 GED is the transition from paper and pencil to a computerized test," said Bonnie Entler, executive director of Seeds of Literacy, a nonprofit that provides free, basic education and GED preparation for adults.
