Zoom Piano Lessons For Adults - When I first started teaching online I found that my lessons were less effective than in person lessons. I have since learned some remarkable teaching techniques and tools that have increased how quickly students learn. Now I would say that students learn 8-10 times more effectively online, for several reasons that I will discuss in this article.
It took me 10 years to learn to reach this point. I now have a mission to help teachers achieve in a few months what took me 10 years to learn. I am currently developing a resource for teachers that walks them through, step-by-step, the most valuable teaching skills. If you are a piano teacher and want to help usher in a new era of piano pedagogy, visit the link below to begin your journey into an exciting world of possibilities made possible only by modern technology.

The first time I tried to take piano lessons online, I found myself in a bit of a quandary. I already had a variety of learning experiences under my belt. I have taught private lessons for 25 years, 10 years in a public school, 5 years at a university, and 4 years at a community college. I learned in all groups and sizes, but I was unprepared for the frustration I first encountered when learning piano online. I've decided that learning in person is more efficient and more enjoyable, and I'm ready to dismiss online lessons as a failed experiment.
Private Music Lessons Online
Luckily, I held on to it and started thinking outside the box. I realized that my frustration stemmed from not being able to use the tools I had personally developed over the past 25 years. When I first started studying I had to start looking with fresh eyes. The difference is that now I had 25 years of experience
Now that I have over 5 years of experience teaching online, I can share with you some of what I've learned. There are many ways to study online. I feel confident because I've experimented and practiced with different methods of online lessons, so I'm comfortable making changes as the situation warrants. I recommend piano teachers experiment with all of the following methods. Some of these methods give superior results because they are more effective than others.
This solution is a quick way to check in with students. Students and teachers can see each other from side angles. Make sure the face, hands and keys are visible. This method is not nearly as effective as private lessons because the teacher cannot write to the student's music, point out notes on the page, or lift the student's arm into the correct position to demonstrate technique. You'll find that there are still a dozen things you missed while you were there.

This solution is particularly simple and can be extremely effective. First, do the lesson yourself so you can see how it works from your perspective. Let students know that they can do the lesson with an acoustic piano, but if they have a MIDI capable piano or keyboard, they will benefit from interactive learning, which will enable them to learn at a faster rate. They may want to specifically get a MIDI capable piano to enhance their piano learning experience.
This solution will allow your students to learn 4X - 8X more effectively than traditional private lessons. Why do students learn so fast? There are many reasons, but let me share with you three of my favorite reasons.
Reason #1 - As you saw in the video, it's easier to train a student to use interactive learning tools if they have remote access to their computer. Both TeamViewer and Zoom offer excellent remote access control. It's almost like you're in the same room with the student as you can point out notes on their screen, highlight passages of music, start and stop music as you like, change tempo, zoom in on music, and hundreds of other music. Other useful tools you can't do without remote access. This saves a great deal of time and frustration that comes from trying to give verbal instructions.
Reason #2 – Students, by nature, cannot practice patients slowly and methodically. It usually takes years for a piano major to learn how to practice effectively. With the interactive tools built into Piano Marvel, especially Chopped together with Prepared Mode and a progress tracker, you can train a student of any age how to systematically perform like a professional pianist in 5 minutes! You can see from the video how the student learned to methodically work through the piece.

If you can focus your students on a goal while they practice, the rate at which they learn increases significantly. Observe what happens to a student by looking at the Prep Mode Chart. In the image above, the student is studying Beethoven's The Tempest, in measures 9-16. With feedback on red notes, time spent and estimated scores, a student immediately begins to focus on a goal. They take this short piece of music and try to make fewer note mistakes, working to reach the target of 14.4 seconds. This goal-oriented practice helps a student focus and learn faster.
Below you can see the assessment mode score of 91% and red and black notes to indicate where he missed notes. From experience, I can tell you that I personally think about beating that 91% first and look at the red notes to see what I missed so I can correct it to improve my score. I am motivated to try again and again until I get 100%.
Perhaps the most effective tool is the progress percentage complete which shows the student that he is 4% complete with the song.
As a teacher, I might ask a student to try to achieve 20% within the next week or improve by 5% per day. This gives the student a great visual focus. When you combine Prep Mode, Assess Mode, and Progress Percentage together, students will find that their practice time is 4X - 8X more productive.
