For the sixth year in a row, women will outnumber men in law school classrooms across the country in 2021, according to new data released by the American Bar Association (ABA).
At , we have pursued law school gender enrollment for 6 years because we believe that female representation in the legal field is important.
With that in mind, let's take a closer look at the gender makeup of the 2021 law school class and how gender demographics have changed since we started tracking the data.

Uh Law Center Debuts New Website
In 2016, for the first time, the number of women enrolled in the Juris Doctor program exceeded 50%. In 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, female enrollment continues to exceed male enrollment.
In 2021, there will again be more women than men in the law chambers. Specifically, women make up 55.29 percent of all students in ABA-accredited law schools.

The percentage of women attending law school represents a 1.2 percent increase over 2020, when 54.09 percent of all students at ABA-approved law schools were women.

In particular, there is a steady increase in the number of women in the top-ranking law schools. Notably, 17 of the top 20 law schools in 2021 have more female than male participants. Every law school in the top 20 has at least 47.56 percent women.

From 2020 to 2021, the percentage of women attending ABA-approved law schools increased by 1.2 percent. Nationally, more women than men are enrolled in most law schools (82.91%) (up from 73.98% in 2020).
In 2021, Northeastern North Carolina surpassed Central University School of Law as the law school with the highest female enrollment (71.99%). UNC Central University School of Law slipped to third place, but women still made up an impressive 69.35 percent of participants.
In 1960, women made up only 3.5 percent of ABA-accredited law school students. In 1970, women made up only 8.5 percent. The demographics of law school students have changed dramatically over the past 50 years.

The changes peaked in 2016, the year data began tracking and women outnumbered men in law school classes for the first time. Since then, the percentage of female participants has increased.
Legal observers point to a number of possible reasons for the increase in female attendance, including creative attempts by many law schools to expand the pool of applicants.
While challenges to gender diversity in the legal field remain, law schools have certainly made great strides toward gender equality in recent decades.
