Avenue Scholar enrolls area high school sophomores and sophomores for their junior and senior years in programming and a highly skilled professional or technical field including: health services, information technology (IT), business, automotive, trade and manufacturing. Avenue Scholar students are eligible to receive an Avenue Horatio Alger Scholarship of up to $8,000 to Metropolitan Community College, which covers tuition, books, fees and any equipment and supplies. School For Summer Jobs
Avenue Scholar supports and guides students in developing a plan for career success based on their individual talents, interests and goals. It begins in the junior year of high school and continues through career entry.
Students take an introductory Avenue Scholar class, explore their chosen field through career awareness programming, and work with a high school career coach to develop an individual career plan. They are involved in financial and personal life events and apply for Intern Omaha internships or other internships/part-time jobs.
Seniors take the Avenue Scholar class and continue to advance in their career path through individual studies. Students also participate in comprehensive internship programming through Metropolitan Community College (MCC) that includes course work or an internship/part-time job in their chosen major. Students gain work experience by participating in an Omaha internship or other internship/part-time job.
All Avenue Scholar students who complete the Avenue Scholar high school program are eligible to receive the Avenue Horatio Alger Scholarship and up to $8,000 in continued support for post-secondary education/training. Progress in a student's career plan will determine post-secondary education or training options.
