The summer of 2021 is among the top 10 warmest on record for many locations in interior NorCal (Figure 1). Additionally, average maximum temperatures for downtown Sacramento and Red Bluff (not shown) ranked in the top 10 warmest records. A hot spell occurred June 14-20 and July 8-11 in downtown Sacramento, where temperatures reached 100 or higher on 4 consecutive days. June 25 to July 14 was Redding's hottest period, with 20 consecutive days of temperatures of 100 or higher.

What's The Lowest Temperature In Sacramento Ca On Record?

A significant heat wave occurred in mid-June, which tied or broke several temperature records between June 17 and 18. Several valley locations reached temperatures near or above 110°, tying or breaking their highest temperature records (Figure 2). Downtown Sacramento had the 4th warmest temperature on record for the month of June of 18 (Figure 2).

The June-August period was the 5th warmest summer on record for downtown Sacramento, as well as the 4th warmest June on record (Figure 3). July 2021 is the 2nd all-time high on record for downtown Sacramento. Additionally, downtown Sacramento has the 6th most 100° days in a year.

Meanwhile, Redding had its warmest July average high temperature on record (Figure 4). Additionally, Redding had its 7th consecutive longest day of 100 degrees or higher.

The number of 100° days this year on record is in the top 10 for Redding, Red Bluff and downtown Sacramento (Figure 5). In fact, July 14th is the 7th hottest day in Redding at 100 degrees or higher.

Climate Of California

U.S. According to Drought Monitor, drought conditions persist across Northern California and range from D3-Extreme Drought to D4-Extreme Drought (Figure 6). The drought classification is due to a significant lack of rainfall in the 2020 and 2021 water years. The NWS Climate Prediction Center's Seasonal Drought Outlook indicates that drought conditions are expected to persist into the fall (Figure 7).

Soil moisture is drier this year and the area has expanded compared to last year, as shown by the warmer colors (Figures 8 and 9). Warmer temperatures will increase the rate of Sierra snowmelt, bringing dangerously cold and fast water to local waterways.

Another day with record high temperatures for the Sacramento area. 91 degrees Saturday at Sacramento's Executive Airport broke the old record of 89 degrees set in 2004. Downtown Sacramento reached its current record high of 92 degrees. Stockton Airport also had a record high of 93 degrees today.

While temperatures aren't expected to reach the 90s for the next few days, long-range weather models are showing above-average temperatures for this time of year. Average daytime highs in late April are in the mid-70s.
