In 1873, Charles H. De Phillips patented Milk of Magnesia, and his company produced the popular antacid and laxative in Stamford, Connecticut, until 1976. Phillips, an English chemist (term pharmacist), emigrated to America in the middle of the 19th century; By 1849 he had established the Phillips Camphor and Wax Company in the Glenbrook section of Stamford. The company's first products were white wax, refined camphor (a skin treatment) and high quality essential oils for medicinal use. However, Philip's Milk of Magnesia became one of the most recognizable household products of the next century.
To compete with other successful pharmacists and doctors, such as Sir James Murray, the Irish doctor who developed "liquid magnesia" in the early 1800s, Phillips sought to create an alternative product with a better taste and improved ability to 'to relieve digestive acid. Using magnesium sulfate and other compounds, Phillips created magnesium hydroxide (magnesium hydrate). When further diluted in water, the substance became a liquid with a milky texture, which he called "milk of magnesia".
Phillips' 1873 patent application—filed with fellow chemist Lawrence Reed—claimed that his product effectively treated infantile ailments, adult digestive problems, pregnancy problems in women, gout and heartburn. Although Phillips advertised and sold Milk of Magnesia from a New York address, the company actually manufactured the drug in Stamford. It was so popular that Philips stopped production of its previous products to focus on the new bestseller. Later, the company sold other products such as cod liver oil, wheat phosphates and cocoa powder for soda fountains, but Milk of Magnesia surpassed these offerings to reign supreme.
In 1885, the Phillips Camphor and Wax Company became the Charles H. Phillips Chemical Company. After Phillips died of apoplexy in 1888, his four sons continued the business. In 1923—fifty years after Phillips patented Milk of Magnesia—the pharmaceutical giant Sterling Products Corporation bought the Charles H. Phillips Chemical Company. He quickly added Phillips Milk of Magnesia Toothpaste, Phillips Dental Magnesia Tooth Powder and Phillips Milk of Magnesia Tablets. Heavy advertising, especially of the original product, boosted their national presence.

Sterling Drug Company continued manufacturing in Stamford until 1976, when it moved its operations to Gulfport, Mississippi. In 1994, Bayer AG bought the US business unit of Sterling Winthrop from the British company Smith Kline Beecham. Included in the purchase is Phillips Milk of Magnesia and its iconic blue bottle.
