Recent reviews will be linked below to help you find more details. CPUs are dependent on dealers from which we can receive sales commissions as per this standard. Our reviews and recommendations are not affected by this. Several tables will be added in different revisions, but some may be from older materials that may not 'pass' between test methods in direct table-to-table comparison. You will need to view the standing comments for this.
How To Choose The Best Cpu For Your Next Gaming Pc Build
If you want more resources on each CPU, including a more in-depth approach, we've combined our reviews below. Note that some are only previews at the moment.
We give Intel's new Core i5-10600K "Best Game", but the 10900K has a higher performance ratio. We have good reasons, the first of which is that it can hit 10900K overclocking performance, especially considering the inevitable GPU bottlenecks in many games. This isn't to disparage the 10900K, but I'll come back to that.
The 10600K is a real leap forward for Intel, which has been stuck with unsold i5 CPUs for centuries. We think this unlocks the i5 series and is the hardest buy for someone who focuses mainly on gaming performance, maybe even a little bit, and not on video production, 3D modeling or anything like that. While the R5 3600 is versatile, especially at its price point, the 10600K is typically in the 4-5% range of the 3600's production-level performance when running at very high speeds. The 3600 is more than powerful for gaming, but if you really care about gaming and don't use desktop apps, the 10600K makes more sense.
The 10600K goes well with the Z490's overclocking support, which will be discussed later, and is a good base that can reach and improve performance levels that AMD has yet to claim. Also, our data on the common misconception that AMD Ryzen CPUs are somehow "critical" or "persistent" when it comes to overall timing doesn't support this. The 10600K is above the average FPS and also above the price of similar Ryzen CPUs in terms of time stability and there are usually limited deviations from the n-1 period. Our criteria for the best gaming CPU include price, but also full performance and customizability. Performance-wise, the 10600K can outperform the 10900K in most games, and both can be optimized until they hit the GPU limit. This will be the case in most cases unless more threads are required for gaming, so we give our 10600K node the best gaming CPU especially for its price. Intel has done a good job here to get back into the game, but it's not without competition. AMD still has a long way to go to compete head-to-head with Intel for the gaming crown.

Next, our recommendations for the Best CPU Budget Games. Where we might recommend the Intel i5-10600K for games without budget constraints, or the 10900K for peak FPS for the few priority competitions that really need it, we recommend something else for budget-conscious gamers. . The AMD Ryzen 3 3300X takes this advice. This $120 CPU can achieve 80-85% performance of high-end CPUs in most games. Much better than the $100 3100 thanks to the 4+0 CCX configuration instead of the 3100's 2+2 CCX configuration where the latency-CCX affects performance. In fact, the 3300X can be integrated with almost any next generation video card without touching the CPU at higher graphics settings. If you're more into low-graphics, high-FPS racing games this would be less true, then our recommendation would be to switch to Intel components. However, if you want more GPU connectivity, i.e. higher graphics settings and possible resolutions above 1080p, the GPU will quickly become more limited than the CPU, so the 3300X makes sense.
We've added some of our tighter graphics, and you can check out previous content for more on how GPUs make more sense. While we strongly don't recommend pairing a $1,200 2080 Ti with a $120 CPU, you can do it and get at least half the performance in most cases. The 2080 Super is all about the pinnacle of performance, but something reasonably priced makes more sense as GPUs are often easier to upgrade than CPUs. But the 3300X offers more space. If you want to learn more, take a look at our coverage of memory optimization and endless wear on AMD Ryzen CPUs. This will give you longer distances and increase your FPS headroom.
Honorable Mention: As an honor, I will point out the Athlon 3000G. This is a good measure if you play simple games with minimal graphics. We've tested this many times over the years so we'll leave it here and let you know you can watch our previous content to get an idea of the appropriate use cases. It's not something we can call "good", but it can definitely get you there if a $100 CPU isn't enough.
Next up is the Best Overall going to the Ryzen 5 3600. In the Best CPUs of 2019 that we released at the end of the year, we gave the same award to the 3600. The R5 3600 retains that title even under direct fire from the new Intel 10600K; the main difference is that in 2020 the 3600 may still have some mid-range gaming setups. These are the reasons discussed in the Best Games section, but the 3600 retains its price advantage, diversity in production apps and games, and is available in Blender, Premiere, V-Ray, etc. maintains the average leadership in applications. It's not as big of a leader as it once was in the $200 to $200 price class, but it's still a leader, and it's also $100 cheaper at $180 on Newegg, where the 10600K is about $280.
Intel Discloses Its Best Gaming Cpu's Release Date And Specs
For anyone not interested in high-end architecture, the 3600 makes a lot of sense. The 3300X is unlikely to have as many cores as it could be in the future and thus provides some additional longevity guarantee. We see the 3600 as the new bridge to Sandy: It's the CPU people will be happy to buy 8 years from now and have a hard time leaving when it's time to upgrade. The price-performance ratio was unbeatable at launch, and although it can now consistently surpass gaming performance, the gap isn't always wide enough to justify the increase in cost. The 3600 drew in the other quarter for best price and best, balanced performance overall; Even with unstable gaming workloads, it's hard to beat the 3600 in terms of price-performance. The 10400 came close, but missed it when paired with a non-Z490 platform.
Our next category is the best small business and hobby product, which we assigned to the AMD R9 3950X last year. With the current version, this has not changed. Threadripper still offers value for high-end workstation users, but for hobbyist artists, editors or coders, or those with small businesses, the 3950X is acceptable enough to make money off the business. It's not as promising financially as Threadripper but still offers most of the benefits. Your main downside is in PCIe lanes, with more out of bounds, but the core count and performance makes it more for users of popular site applications or workflows.
In our testing, we found the 3950X to perform exceptionally on code compiled for Windows, reaching the highest ranking on the table outside of the more expensive Threadripper series. Recently, we also noticed that the 3950X has dropped from its original price.
